As a Social Studies teacher this story just makes me sad. I feel for this teacher and the school. I am not sure why they had to shut down the entire school system over one misunderstanding about what is in the curriculum. Maybe have a forum for parents to express their concern and discuss the intent of the assignment may have been a better idea, doncha think?
BTW, although I know why CNN chose the headline they published it is not accurate. It was not Islam homework it was Social Studies homework about the Islamic religion which is part of the curriculum.
