another mass shooting in Australia

Australia, mistakingly labeled as a country that completely banned certain guns after a tragic event in 1996, had another mass shooting yesterday. 4 people were killed.

It’s still legal to own semi automatic guns, including the AR-15 system. Just like it’s legal to own a fully automatic gun in the US, it’s just heavily regulated and taxed highly as well. It takes at least a year to complete the required steps a citizen has to in order to legally purchase these guns.

Can anyone explain to me how the gun caused yesterday’s mass shooting in Australia? Can anyone further explain how a gun ban led to this happening?
