Texas, we all take pride in the legend that is Texas, the state and former Republic. It’s the stuff of legends heard round the world, truly epic.
It’s also the story of slave owners and oppression, a slave Republic fighting to keep their slaves.
These are factually true words, do white people in Texas even acknowledge these facts?
I don’t believe in repudiating the history, but an honest look at it is required. We need to own it and move forward. Too often we as whites, look to cast blame on others and deny the racism and oppression we as a people have done to others. Perhaps you blame it all on the Confederacy or the Klan, or folks that hate blacks perhaps your family is recent immigrants. I am proud of my ancestors and what they accomplished, my family has been in the South since 1670 - we are all sinners before the Lord. We don’t have to give up our pride and our culture or our history to have empathy for a race we have oppressed for 400 years. We don’t have to accede to their every demand that may show up on twitter, but we do have some responsibility to be honest with ourselves and have empathy for the oppressed who have not yet reached full equality, in part because of our oppression.
Y’all can call it Liberal. I call it, owning it like a grown ass man.
We need a leader who will move us towards the dream of MLK. A color blind society where we are not constantly divided by race and classifications. This moment is that opportunity, acknowledgment is required first, then both sides must forgive and find a path forward together. It may hurt some, but it will pale in comparison to the pain of the oppressed over the years and the damage done to African American culture.
