Aston out as WB Head Coach

Coach Aston is an interesting case. A couple years ago she looked like she was about to turn this program in to one of the top women’s programs in the country. Then all the sudden the bottom just fell out. Probably didn’t help that the best program in the country not named UConn was in the state of Texas.

If the softball hire by CDC is any indication expect CDC to go big game hunting here for her replacement.

few options just off the top of my head.

Becky Hammon- I know UF made her a strong offer last year to coach their women’s program. She may want to stay on an NBA path, but I’d put an offer out there.

Sue Semrau HC Florida state. Been to the elite 8 3 times

Cori Close HC UCLA
Quiten Helsstrom HC Syracuse. Got them to the NC game a couple years ago.

If they decide to go with an up and comer Regan Pebbly from TCU would be a good one.

1-18 vs. Mulkey. Aston had the no. 1 recruiting class in the country 4 years ago, the same year BU got Lauren Cox, the no. 1 HS player in the country. BU got a national title, and Aston got fired. Failed to capitalize. Bottom line - she could recruit with the best but failed to develop.

Funniest moment in the rivalry - a couple of years ago, Aston got her one win against Mulkey, and was killing it on the recruiting trail. Baylor beat them the 2nd time around to win the regular season title. Mulkey told the reporters - "Everybody wanted to say we were stale food and there's a new sheriff in town. For all those naysayers out there, there's not a new sheriff in town yet."

Aston - Mulkey reminds me of the coaches from the Adam Sandler starrer The Waterboy...

I’m not surprised as I thought she would do better. She always recruited well, but couldn’t get over that hump. Mainly someone up in Waco.

Guess she didn’t have that big buyout clause.
It was the last year of her deal, so no buy out. Wasn’t even technically fired. In fact CDC may already have an idea of who he wants

College coaches rarely get to the final year of a contract. Its really for other coaches to use it against you in recruiting. She had to know she was dead woman walking and he probably had a short list and feelers out as soon as he decided to let her into the final year of her contract without an extension. My guess is that candidates have already been contacted. He really can't say much due to HR rules. You have to go through the whole hiring process even through the job is usually filled before the official process begins.

Wow looks like I was right CDC already knew who he wanted. Vic Schafer formerly of Mississippi State is the new women’s basketball coach at Texas. Home run hire. Two final 4’s and an elite 8 to his credit in 7 years at Mississippi state.

You are correct sir. Schafer was the no. 1 assistant for Gary Blair at ATM (a national title winner himself). Miss. St. had NOTHING. They are now a powerhouse. Took down Mulkey in the Elite 8 a few short years ago in a big upset. He is a little older, but I bet he still has the fire in his belly - not only to take down BU, but to stick it to Blair and the Aggies. Great hire!

Yeah easily a top 10 coach in the country. I mean short of getting Mulkey to leave Baylor or Geno to leave UConn this is the best you could do. Kudos to CDC.

couple things.

1. If there is anything we can learn from the softball hire, this hire and the TCU basketball hire CDC made is he values experience, and previous high level winning, and will go pay to get it. This is a great sign because when Texas was at its best in the early 2000’s you had Mack, Barnes and Augie all of whom came with extensive resumes

2. Obviously he was working on a replacement while Aston was still technically in place. I’m a big fan of the hire obviously. It not sure that’s the best way to conduct business
