They want to be everything all at once and too insecure to have a true identity and this is why they fail.
It starts even before the football. They want to be a unique school where “From outside you can’t understand it and from the inside you can’t explain it” but they also want to be the flagship school. YOU CAN’T BE BOTH. You can’t be a school that shuns outsiders but also be the school that the state takes pride in.
If you want to be a quirky school that’s not for everyone then be a quirky school that’s not for everyone. When you want it both ways you just come off like an annoying 14 year old girl saying “love me! Love me!”
Now how this translates to the field. When Sark took over he tore down the program. He knew we suck for two years. He knew there would be ways to call games that would have made those first two years easier but come at the cost of long term success. Last year OU did the opposite. They said we’re going to focus on Texas at the expense of the season. Both worked because both coaches picked a lane (wrong lane in OU’s case)
aTm didn’t want to focus just on Texas but they also didn’t want to break down their program with the “best class ever” as upperclassmen. They made it clear this first game against Texas was very very important but they weren’t willing to do what OU did last year
The problem they have now is that if Elko does want to break the program down he’s a year behind and out of the honeymoon phase. His vision is going to be a harder sell when year one was just more of the same.
Elko is a deadman walking. Enjoy the next few years guys.
