Tuesday 9:25 p.m. update:
With two talented starters on the mound, an expected pitcher’s duel between No. 5 Texas (17-8) and rival Texas A&M (18-9) turned into exactly that. Unfortunately for the Longhorns, their bats didn’t travel on the road and talented Texas A&M right-handed starter Nathan Dettmer kept them off-balance all night. Texas managed to put on just six baserunners and lost, 2-0.
A positive tonight for the Longhorns was Pete Hansen’s outing. While we still haven’t seen the dominant Hansen capable of missing bats with all his pitches, including a more lively fastball, the young lefty made just one true mistake during his 5.1 innings. Unfortunately, that mistake was a fastball that found Logan Britt’s barrel in the bottom of the fourth inning, which put the Aggies ahead 1-0.
But that was the only run Hansen allowed. He gave up just four hits, walked two and struck out three. Multiple times, Hansen showed improved competitiveness in a tough road environment by making quality pitches to escape jams, including runners on first and second in the first inning with no outs.
Tanner Witt followed Hansen and also made just one big mistake, which also resulted in a solo homer. Otherwise, the hard-throwing freshman was mostly dominant with two hits, one walk and five strikeouts over 2.0 innings. Cole Quintanilla entered with a runner on base in the eighth inning and struck out the only two batters he faced. If he can keep this form, it could become one of the biggest developments of the season.
Offensively, Silas Ardoin continues to swing the bat consistently better than any other Texas player. The catcher’s ninth-inning at-bat was elite. He battled into a 3-2 count and then fought off a fastball and lined it into right field to keep the game alive before Witt grounded out to end it.
At the top of the order, Douglas Hodo, Eric Kennedy and Cam Williams combined to claim six of UT’s nine strikeouts. Williams is probably going to see a lot more changeups moving forward and Hodo’s swing and miss issues have increased over the last couple weeks.
The Longhorns are on the road at Kansas this weekend for a three-game series that begins Thursday because Easter is Sunday.
