I know there has been a lot of talk in the recruiting world about defensive line recruiting and how we likely will lose our top targets because of the base 3-4 defense we run.
I'm curious why we don't run a base 5-2 over defense. This is the defense that Converse Judson used to run back when DW Rutledge was the coach. I've seen very few defenses that match it in terms of putting pressure on the offensive line in run blocking.
A basic 5-2 defense has a nose guard over the center two 5 technique defensive tackles that basically play read and react engaging the offensive tackle and keeping him off of the linebackers. The strong side DE is basically on the outside shoulder of the TE on the line of scrimmage while the backside DE is playing off the line almost like a 3rd linebackers. This is the base of a 5-2 defense.
Now the variation of this defense that drives an offensive line crazy is the 5-2 over.
This defense really challenges the offensive line. In this defense the nose guard is shaded to the strong side right between the center and guard. His job is to force a double team between those two because he is nothing but a bull rusher. On the strong side it is basically the same as a 5-2 defense with the defensive tackle over the outside shoulder of the offensive tackle and the DE on the outside of the TE. However the backside is more like a 4-3 defense with the weakside DT shading the the outside shoulder of the offensive guard and the weakside DE on the outside of the weakside tackle
(I tried to draw diagram of what I'm talking about but it was lost in formatting.)
The reason I bring this up is because I have insomnia but also because the aggsy are all over broughton that if he comes to Texas we are going to turn him into a nose tackle. In a defense like this he could play either a 3 technique or a 5 technique.
