I know there has been a lot of talk in the recruiting world about defensive line recruiting and how we likely will lose our top targets because of the base 3-4 defense we run.

I'm curious why we don't run a base 5-2 over defense. This is the defense that Converse Judson used to run back when DW Rutledge was the coach. I've seen very few defenses that match it in terms of putting pressure on the offensive line in run blocking.

A basic 5-2 defense has a nose guard over the center two 5 technique defensive tackles that basically play read and react engaging the offensive tackle and keeping him off of the linebackers. The strong side DE is basically on the outside shoulder of the TE on the line of scrimmage while the backside DE is playing off the line almost like a 3rd linebackers. This is the base of a 5-2 defense.

Now the variation of this defense that drives an offensive line crazy is the 5-2 over.

This defense really challenges the offensive line. In this defense the nose guard is shaded to the strong side right between the center and guard. His job is to force a double team between those two because he is nothing but a bull rusher. On the strong side it is basically the same as a 5-2 defense with the defensive tackle over the outside shoulder of the offensive tackle and the DE on the outside of the TE. However the backside is more like a 4-3 defense with the weakside DT shading the the outside shoulder of the offensive guard and the weakside DE on the outside of the weakside tackle

(I tried to draw diagram of what I'm talking about but it was lost in formatting.)

The reason I bring this up is because I have insomnia but also because the aggsy are all over broughton that if he comes to Texas we are going to turn him into a nose tackle. In a defense like this he could play either a 3 technique or a 5 technique.

Sorry to hear about your insomnia. I've suffered from it in the past but mainly due to gall stones. I've been able to remedy the gall stones without surgery so I sleep better. Do you know what causes your insomnia?

The defense....

1. I blame Mike Leach for unleashing the spread/air raid offense on Texas. I'm not a big x's and o's guy but it seems that the online wide splits and quick qb releases have increased a need for increased and difficult to read past defense schemes. If the ball is sailing over a dlinemans head 90% of the time for 10 yd gains while having no impact, he is going to be replaced by a dime or nickel back that can stop the pass while defending the run or blitzing. The $ec lacks the creativity to do this but i have a feeling that the whipping of their 2 strongest teams is going to force some changes.

The b12 is going to be reverting to the mean starting this year. There is going to be increased running but it's not going to be the slow heavy plodding of the sec or b1g. It's going to be runs from passing sets and runs created by forcing teams into dime or lightning packages. RBs are going to be lighter with more muscle, less fat, and quicker. Our defense is a tweener. It's a flanking maneuver. With the correct athletes, think tyler owens, who are tall, strong, lean, and fast, texas can stop the heavy run teams like Georgia with lockdown corners and stacking the box. We can matchup against air raid teams by using lightning and any combination in between. Time will tell but past performance has shown excellent results.

Edit: 3 losses last year.

Maryland: d players out of natural position killed us early. Lack of depth was the problem. We are fixing this but ilb is still a problem.

Ok st.: 2 starting corners were suspended for the first qtr.. we spotted osu 21 points in the air. We started a true frosh and true soph., killer.

Ou#2: we led early but couldn't overcome the league wanting their team in the playoff. Not the d's fault. I posted a video of a typical no call in another thread.

Conclusion: the older forms of d are going away. I think you will see many teams begin to copy us. The issue will be the talent on the field.

Insomnia is caused by long afternoon naps after work. probably should stop those.

Agree with everything you said, keep in mind that this defense is only a name. just like we are running a base 3-4 defense. you almost never see us in that formation. The key is that for a guy like Leal or Broughton it shows them that yes, you can come to Texas and still be a 3 technique, you won't necessarily be a nose guard. However being a nose guard in this defense is awesome.

Alabama runs a 3-4 and recruits out of this world right now. They’ve been winning, we haven’t.

That is all that matters. As Texas gets back to winning more and more the recruiting will take care of itself at a blue blood.

Clempson ran bama off the field.

What is your point?

Bama topping out? maybe, maybe not.... I recall some of MB's stellar classes turning to crap and down we went. Bama does not normally have a tough OOC schedule. They play a lot of like teams in the sec..

There is no defense that can stop a QB who is that good. Just like there was no defense that could stop Michael Jordan.

We know he won't be tested in the acc. I'm not sold on him yet. He looks good but he needs a tough regular season schedule to sell me and the acc doesn't have it.

The original premise of the thread was the theory that because Texas runs a 3-4 defense they will struggle recruiting DL. Clearly that has not been a problem for Alabama under Saban as they have been on maybe the most dominant run in winning and recruiting ever.

Texas just needs to get back to consistent winning and it won’t matter what formation they run they will recruit just fine.

Yes, and I believe it's already begun. Not all at once but it's improving. We have some head winds that winning will cure.

Defense was pretty good against Georgia.
