Best HS QB to come out of Texas

Man, you can't compare modern football to old school. My list:
1) Bobby Layne / Sammy Baugh
2) Drew Brees
3) VY
4) Kyler Murray
5) Tittle . Not so much for his HS years but his NFL career.

Honorable mentions: Ty Detmer, Davy O'Brien, Patrick Mahomes, Matthew Stafford, Gilbert Grape, Colt McCoy

I played in San Antonio and coached in the San Antonio and Austin Areas. All the old timers talked about how dominant Tommy Kramer was back in the day. He went an played at Rice and then 13 years in the NFL. He was a pass first QB in the age of the wishbone so he didn't get much attention.

Get Brees out of there. Sorry but he BECAME an all time great. In high school he was good, not great. Same as Baker Mayfield. Good, not great...

Wasn't Manziel a legendary high school player? College and pro careers have no power here.

He was a wr that shared qb duties until his Jr year I believe. Really good dual threat qb but didn't overly excell at either. Everyone wanted the next VY dual threat and he was anointed. Legendary status? Only in Collie Station where he actually earned it imo.

It's all subjective. Brees was lighting it up until he blew his ACL which is why most recruiters passed on him, including UT. When he came back I think West Lake went undefeated through the state championship.

Yes, remove his collegiate & NFL career and he bumps down. In that same breath would we then have to move Gilbert up into top 2-3? Hard to compare eras.

He was 28-0 as the starter in 2 years and was the 5A offensive player of the year in the state. Brees was really good.

Ok really good. But all time Texas high school great? I still think that's a reach. A lot of guys win state titles with undefeated teams.

Gilbert in HS is above Brees IMO.

Just like any other top whatever list, if it's not YOUR list then it is wrong. Who'd you have for your top 3?

Everybody knows who Tom Landry was.

Tom played/coached against some of the greatest to ever play the game. Johnny Unitas. Staubach. Bradshaw. Montana. Elway. Marino.

Landry said that hands down the GREATEST QB he EVER saw was this kid from Highland Park named Bobby Layne.

Manziel had some insane numbers his senior year. It was my last year coaching and they played a few teams we played and I saw some games on film. The dude was unstoppable. I thought he was a little overhyped because of the competition and his WRs did a really good job of getting open when he scrambled. He had 77 touchdowns, 3600 passing yards 1700 rushing yards and put up some insane numbers vs Lake Travis, SA Madison and Steele. They were probably the second best 4A team in the state, the just couldn't get past Lake Travis.

What about Odell James? Drew Tate? I can't imagine picking an all time top 3 honestly. Murray has the skins to make a solid point. So does Gilbert. I can't consider college or pro success. VY certainly on video has to be considered. It's an almost impossible task.

Bobby Layne was good in his time, but he only completed 49% of his passes in his NFL career. And back then, they didn't throw the ball nearly as often as they do now.

Wow haven’t heard that name in a long time. I watched Odell at Mac. Dude was VY before VY.

Bill Bradley.....He made the cover of Sports Illustrated before he ever played a down of College ball.

Greatest HS running back from Texas?....Easy...Ken Hall...no one even close.

I was at the San Antonio Lee/Baytown Sterling game at the Astrodome in 1972. Kramer was an outstanding QB, and Sterling was fortunate to win the game. Kramer was a stud at Rice and started and excelled for the Minnesota Vikings for 10+ years. Sterling went on to state that year, only to lose to Permian 37-7 at DKR. I'll never forget that game and how intimidating and dominate that Permian and their MOJO was to Sterling. Great memories!

To be fair we can't fault him for it.

Was Emmitt Smith THAT elite or was he just good with an elite line? I always wondered what if Barry Sanders had played with that o-line.
Really the narrative that Emmitt always had some all world line isn’t true. He had an elite offensive line from 90-95. The 95 season is when they all started getting old.

I saw a few Allen Eagles games during the 2011 season. Alec Morris, a 6'3" Alabama commit, was the QB. Periodically, a much shorter, quicker QB would come in as a change of pace QB. That QB looked tiny compared to everyone else. But, also, much, much quicker. I'd never seen any player that quick. He took over the game for the few plays that he was in.
Kyler Murray as a freshman. He took over the next year, never lost a game as a starter, and won 3 state championships.

3 things--

1. It's not Bobby's fault that NFL receivers back then didn't have the hands that guys have now.

2. Landry knew Bobby only completed 49% of his passes in the NFL. He also knew Montana completed 63.2% of his and Elway only completed 57% of his. Still called Bobby the best.

3. And then there's this.

Show me any QB in any era that scores 40 points (all the points) by themselves in a bowl win.
Vince rushed for 200, threw for 267, had 3 rushing TDs and a 2 point conversion.

Layne threw for 2 Tds, ran for 3, caught 1 and kicked 4 extra points (he missed one, his only blemish of the day).

Vince was a one man show against USC and it defined his career.

Bobby Layne invented the one man show.

You can't really compare guys from different eras though. 60% completion percentage was above average in Montana and Elway's era. I'm sure a 49% completion percentage was actually pretty good for that era.

I just know when I watched VY play in high school it was like taking a guy from the NFL and letting him play in a high school game.
