Best HS QB to come out of Texas

Everybody knows who Tom Landry was.

Tom played/coached against some of the greatest to ever play the game. Johnny Unitas. Staubach. Bradshaw. Montana. Elway. Marino.

Landry said that hands down the GREATEST QB he EVER saw was this kid from Highland Park named Bobby Layne.
Were they contemporary at UT?

Bobby Layne was good in his time, but he only completed 49% of his passes in his NFL career. And back then, they didn't throw the ball nearly as often as they do now.
And they didn't have the level of receiver back then that they do now.............

3 things--

1. It's not Bobby's fault that NFL receivers back then didn't have the hands that guys have now.

2. Landry knew Bobby only completed 49% of his passes in the NFL. He also knew Montana completed 63.2% of his and Elway only completed 57% of his. Still called Bobby the best.

3. And then there's this.

Show me any QB in any era that scores 40 points (all the points) by themselves in a bowl win.
Vince rushed for 200, threw for 267, had 3 rushing TDs and a 2 point conversion.

Layne threw for 2 Tds, ran for 3, caught 1 and kicked 4 extra points (he missed one, his only blemish of the day).

Vince was a one man show against USC and it defined his career.

Bobby Layne invented the one man show.
Not debating Bobby Layne as he was WELL before my time. Just commenting on the DBs in that clip. Was that the 3 Stooges? =)rollZero running technique, bad angles, looks like they’re running on ice!

say what you will about Emmet. He himself said many times that Barry Sanders was the greatest ever. Emmit played with 2 dislocated shoulders to win a game

I don't knock on Emmitt at all, clearly an all-time great. It just so happen that a great rb had a stout line whereas B Sanders did what he did with a line comparable to 2021 Tx. Man, if he only had some competent blocking what could have been.

Did you know that Emmet called Barry when he announced his retirement and tried to talk him out of it. He wanted Barry to be the all time leader.

.....and before anyone gets the idea that Emmit was not all that....He was basically unstoppable when everyone knew he was getting the ball. ....plus....he rarely left the ball on the ground.
