For about six months, the recruitment of Rivals250 running back Toneil Carter went about as smoothly as possible. The Under Armour All-American committed to Georgia over the summer and really never looked back for the better part of six months. Things change in a hurry in the last few days.

With Georgia running backs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel recently announcing they’ll return to UGA for the 2017, Georgia’s scholarship numbers got tight and it was going to be difficult for Georgia to honor Carter’s plans to enroll for the upcoming spring semester. Because of the last-minute change of plans, Carter’s hand was forced and he decommitted from Georgia on Monday morning. Later in the day, he added his name to the Texas commitment list.

Carter and people close to him have been scrambling around since Friday, when they learned of the possibility that his early enrollee spot at Georgia may no longer be on the table, and the 6-1, 200-pound runner decided he needed to make a quick decision on his future on Monday. Suddenly, Georgia’s loss becomes Texas’ gain.

“He has a chance to be a great player. He’s a pretty special kid, is extremely fast and powerful,” Langham Creek head coach Todd Thompson said. “He’s been playing for us since he was a freshman. He’s a great athlete, if he gets in there and works hard he has a chance a great player at Texas.”

The Texas football staff is working out the details on Carter’s enrollment, but the plan is for Carter to report to Texas in mid-January for the spring semester. Prior to that, he’ll play in the Under Armour All-American Game on January 1.

Prior to Monday’s events, there was talk a couple weeks ago that Carter had planned to take a December official visit to Texas before dead period began, but Carter decided at the last minute to forego any visits so he wouldn’t upset the Georgia coaching staff. That decision ultimately backfired when Georgia ran tight on scholarships, but Carter is happy to move on and join the Texas commitment list.

“You can’t go wrong with Texas,” Thompson said. “If your other choice is the University of Texas, how could you not be excited.”

Carter is a four-star prospect and checks in as the No. 15-ranked running back in the nation.
