I mentioned earlier today that I had been told new UT OC/QB coach Sterlin Gilbert was doing a little out-of-state recruiting. Thanks to the reach and power of OB (love you guys!) we were able to put the pieces together.
Gilbert met with JUCO QB Riley Ferguson today. Ferguson goes to Coffeyville Community College in Kansas but is home in Carolina on break. I spoke with him a few minutes ago to get an update. Some highlights ...
--- Texas had been in contact with Ferguson prior to Gilbert's arrival. Ferguson said he had been in touch with Jay Norvell.
--- He said the visit today kind of came out of nowhere and was set up at the last minute.
--- He has taken visits to Arkansas State and Memphis. Both have offered, along with Iowa State and Temple.
--- Gilbert told Ferguson the UT staff would meet on Monday to decide if Texas will extend an offer. If the Longhorns do offer, a date of January 12 was discussed for a possible official visit.
--- Ferguson said he very well make a decision by the end of this week. When I asked if a Texas offer would cause him to delay that decision, he said he's not sure and would have to see how he feels. He'll be enrolling at whatever school he chooses in January.
--- Gilbert told him about the offense he'll be running at Texas and Ferguson feels he'd fit in well. Gilbert said it will be a lot of run/pass option stuff, lots of formations, throwing the ball a lot, up-tempo.
"I feel like I'd fit in really good in that offense," Ferguson said. "It's like the Baylor offense, throwing the ball a lot, making reads, playing fast."
Full report with more quotes coming on Monday morning.

Texas meets with Juco QB
New Texas offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert wasted little time hitting the recruiting trail, and he's doing it in grand fashion.
Gilbert arrived in Austin on Saturday. His hiring was formally announced on Sunday. On Sunday, he also boarded a plane for North Carolina to meet with junior college quarterback [db]Riley Ferguson[/db].
Key quote: "It just happened out of nowhere. They just said want to come out and see me, saw my film," Ferguson said. "He said I'd be a good fit for their offense that he has and we went through some things tonight.
Possible offer?: Ferguson was told by Gilbert that he should know today (Monday) if he'll pick up a Texas offer.
"They said they're going to hit me up tomorrow. It's going to be through Twitter or something," Ferguson said. "I think they want to have a staff meeting tomorrow, then let me know."
Other options: Ferguson, who had been in contact with UT previously through Jake Norvell, has taken official visits to Memphis and Arkansas State. Iowa State and Temple have also offered.
"I wouldn't really say I have a top or anything," Ferguson said. "I'm definitely going to look at all my schools, choose which school is best for me."
Possible UT visit: If Texas offers, Ferguson said a January 12 visit is a possibility.
Thoughts on Texas: Ferguson was pretty low-key when I asked for his thoughts on UT. He did enjoy the time meeting with Gilbert ("He's pretty laid back, seemed really cool") and feels he could fit in well with what Texas is trying to do offensively.
"It's just the University of Texas. That's always something to say about it," Ferguson said. "It's a good situation. I guess you could say they need more of a passing quarterback who can throw the ball. I talked to coach tonight and it went well.
"I feel like I'd fit in really good in that offense," Ferguson said. "It's like the Baylor offense, throwing the ball a lot, making reads, playing fast."
Ferguson on his strengths and weaknesses: At 6-4 and 190 pounds, Ferguson has a big arm and likes to throw the ball downfield. He's not a plus athlete, but said he feels he has good pocket awareness and can buy time and even make plays with his legs when called upon.
"I have a strong arm. I'm very accurate, have the ability to extend plays very well. I feel like I read coverages and process things very quickly," Ferguson said. "I can always get stronger and faster. I feel like I can just, when pocket breaks down, get outside the pocket make things happen and keep my eyes down field. I can run too. I'm not slow but can always get faster."
