On Tuesday, the latest Orangebloods Podcast came out, which can ingested for free via this link.
Due to a high volume of request, I have transcribed a large portion of the podcast. It's not a 100-percent exact translation, but it gets the job mostly done. If you want every question answered, listen to the podcast.
Buy or Sell: Shaka makes it to the end of the season before being fired by?
Me: He's going to make it to the end of the season. I don't know that basketball is filled with so much passion from everybody that surrounds the basketball program, like people may not show up and people may not be happy, but I just never I don't have the sense that Texas thinks of itself as the type of athletic department that does things like that. I think that they have so much respect for Shaka Smart as a human being. They're not going to give him the Lane Kiffin treatment. I could be wrong, but man, I just don't see that. I might even go so far as to say there's a better chance that he gets another year, then he gets fired before the season ends. I think he's going to get that.
Buy or Sell: Chris Del Conti can make it through 2027 without winning a national championship in any major sport?
Me: Yeah, I I don't think some of you understand the lay of the land. CDC prints money as an athletic director. Look, I can't go before DeLoss Dodds. Anything before that really is before my time. But CDC is on a different level as a revenue generator than anybody The University of Texas has ever had. So can he make it seven more years before he loses his job? Yeah, I think there's still a football coaching search that he could have. He's not going to get fired. They've never won a basketball national championship ever. So those are really the only two major sports. I know Texas fans will include baseball. So. I will as well for the sake of shits and grins, but most major universities have two major sports. Baseball somewhat pays for itself, which makes it different for Texas than a lot of other universities. And because Texas has been so historically amazing at baseball. Texas fans include that as a major sport.
Guys, national championships are hard and they're hard. So in my lifetime, I am I am forty 43 years old. Texas has won one national championship. It's played for a couple of others in four f***ing decades. So, yes, as long as Del Conte prints cash, he'll be here until 2037 if he wants to.
Buy or Sell: Texas makes the Tournament in 2021?
Me: Buy. I don't know. I have no idea. Look if Greg Brown were on the team and it brings back the majority of the team? Greg Brown, not on this team, plus, I don't know what his team looks like next year. I don't know who the coach is. It's a really hard question to answer. I'm not really impressed with the talent on campus right now. Full disclosure - and that's an indictment on Shaka. That's his responsibility. You know, outside of Matt Coleman and Jericho Sims, you know, and obviously Andrew Jones (certainly pre-cancer). You know, there are some good pieces. Maybe that's being too rough at the overall talent on the program, but. it's not a team that's full of guys that I think are going to take you for the tournament. And I think that's one of the problems that Shaka has right no. He's in one of the toughest leagues in the country and his team just isn't that good.
Buy or Sell: Tom Herman already knows who his tenth coach is and has a commitment that goes into effect after national signing day?
Buy. Probably because I don't get the sense that a lot of sense of urgency exists in his actions at this moment, which is probably an indication to some degree that Tom Hermann knows who he's going to hire, and this wouldn't be completely surprising. This happens a lot. Coaches, assistant coaches, they don't necessarily want to blow up all of the bridges from their previous job, they don't want to make the head coach that gave them their previous shot upset. They don't want it to be horrible for them.
So a lot of times, yeah. This is what happens. It's probably a little surprising that this isn't something that has happened a couple of times in the building of the staff. So many guys have been replaced. It's probably a little surprising that there's only one position that's not filled instead of two, because it makes a lot of sense that the one or two of these situations would take place after National Signing Day.
Buy or Sell: Shaka is a virus that has infected the OB community and the only person that has the cure and refuses to use it?
Sell. I'll sell that. Just because he has been fired now does not mean CDC is refusing to use it. I don't think fire. I look at you. What and what's the upside to fire in shock. A smart well, it makes everybody kind of hates his ass and make them like happy. I suppose it's that guarantee on the box in Tommy Boy. Everybody wants this thing to be over so bad that that's the guarantee. I don't know what that upside is. I think you think you would lose this team completely. This team loves Shaka. And I think the collateral damage done from a firing would be significant.
Ultimately, the question is CDC refuses to use the cure. I don't see from the sources that I've spoken with about Shaka Smart inside the athletic department. It's on the table. The cure is in play in a way that has not been on the table previously.
Buy or Sell: With the new coaches, will win eleven games next year?
I will sell that. Stop, just stop. This was an average football team all season long. It's better at the offensive coordinator position. It's better at the defensive coordinator position. It's better at the Special teams coordinator. But to quantify what it means to have those changes is hard. It's giving the benefit of the doubt to this football team that has not earned it. Stop giving benefit of the doubt to Tom Herman and this football program until it is earned. They've had two bad seasons out of the three that he's been here. And the third season was only saved in a lot of ways by that Georgia game. It was a major bowl games, so it counts. It counts as a successful season.
Tom Herman has not earned a single benefit of the doubt to just say they'll win eleven games next year. That's a lot. Not ready to go there yet.
Buy or Sell: The combo of Jordan Whittington when healthy, Jake Smith, Brennan Eagles and Bijan Robinson will be the best collection of skill in the big twelve? That's two five stars and two very high end four stars.
Buy. Yeah. Yeah. Based on based on that, absolutely. I'm trying to think, Oklahoma has got two five stars covered at the wide receiver position. I don't know that they've got a Bijan Robinson at the running back position.
Buy or Sell: Texas finishes with a top 10 recruiting class?
Texas is 20 second right now in the rivals.com rankings. But a lot of that has to do with the fact that they only have 17 signings. They're going to end up with enough that I think the fact that they've got a 3.65 average star ranking, which is so much better, that's better than any school in front of them going into the number eight position. Oregon is 3.67. Nobody else between eight and twenty two where Texas currently is, has a better average star ranking per prospect than Texas does, which means when they add three, four or five more commitments in this class before it's all said and done. Yeah, I think you're gonna be right on the line. So I'll say buy. And I think that if ultimately it's gonna be really close,
Buy or sell: Josh Moore plays football for Texas in twenty twenty?
Now, the answer is it is totally going to be dictated by what happens in his criminal case. And there's no resolution to that now. Full transparency - I think, yes. My gut says that he ends up back at Texas.
Buy or sell: People have way too high expectations for Bijan Robison's playing time in 2020 and he actually ends up splitting time with Keaontay Ingram?
Buy. Sharing the job is what I fully expect to happen if you think that Ingram going into his junior year is going to be an afterthought, you're not really paying attention to how freshman running backs are used. Jamaal Charles was a starter in 2005, but you know, he didn't get all the carries. Ricky Williams was probably the best freshman running back I've ever seen at Texas, and he's still split carries with two other running backs. So, yes, I'm absolutely buying that. You think he's averaging twenty carries a game next year? I just don't know that you're thinking very clearly if you do.
Buy or sell: the best way to get 11 put the best 11 players on the field offensively next year excuse me, is to go to a 4 wide set with Jake Smith and Jordan Whittington together on the field at the same time?
Buy to an extent. I'm not so certain that you can't go three wides and still get those two guys on the field together, so it doesn't always have to be for wides. But yeah, I want those two guys on the field together as much as possible.
Buy or sell: Texas money-whips Chris Beard away from Texas Tech to replace Shaka?
I know you guys want me to say yes. I think I want to say yes, but if if the question is Chris Beard over the field, I'll probably take the field, which means I'll sell it.
Buy or sell: Bijan will be a start next year in time for the OU game?
Yeah, I'll buy that.
Buy or sell: Texas lands Camar Wheaton?
I think he's one of those guys kind of playing a little bit to wait and see with Texas right now. And I think one of the themes of this 2021 class is that a lot of the elite of the elite guys are not going to wait until, let's say, October or November before internally making their decisions, or publicly, or both. I think one of the things that Texas has going for it right now is that in 2021 they already have a number of really stellar commitments already. I think getting more commitments at the level that they already have will be tricky. it'll be a case by case basis.
Buy or Sell: Vince was more impressive in the national championship run than Joe Burrow?
Sell. Pretty equal. Borrow, in the national playoff games was from a passing standpoint, better than anything we've ever seen in college football. Now, Vince did it in the national championship game at a level rushing, passing and passing against elite competition that has made him an immortal. But the game before, you know. Late in the season, he had that A&M game, which wasn't great, and Burrow off the top of my head didn't have any games like that. So to me, they're equal in that respect.
Buy or sell: Sam Will be drafted on day two of the draft next year?
Buy. That's kind of where my gut feeling says.
Buy or sell: Texas fans should be more worried about Rattler than they were of Hurts.?
Buy. You you should always be on edge, you should always be on high alert. Texas hasn't earned the right to be taking anything for granted as it relates to the five time defending big champion Oklahoma Sooners
Buy or sell: The 2001 team had more talent than any other team you've seen at Texas?
Sell. I'm still taking 2005, predominantly because that's one of the greatest defensive battlefields in the history of college football and the 2001 team wasn't quite that good there.
Buy or sell: You think Bijan is better than Cedric coming out of high school?
Sell. I would have said that about Bijan going into Cedric's senior year. By the time I'd seen Cedric Benson play like four or five times in person as a senior, I was sold on him.
Buy or sell: Kobe is top ten all time?
I don't know where I'm slotting Kobe. It's somewhere between five and 10. But yeah, he's top 10 because a guy Kevin Durant is starting to be creep in to that top ten territory all time. Like he's definitely between 10 and 15. You know, there's a case that can be made that he's in that area and Kobe's ahead of KD. He's got five rings. He's just more accomplished. So, yeah.
