From UT:
Sterns named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week
The Big 12 Conference honored Caden Sterns for the first time in his career.
AUSTIN, Texas - The Big 12 Conference announced on Monday that Longhorns’ true freshman safety Caden Sterns was named Newcomer of the Week following his standout performance against TCU on Saturday. It is the first time in his young career that he has earned weekly honors.
A native of Cibolo, Texas, Sterns totaled five tackles and two interceptions against the Horned Frogs in the Longhorns’ 31-16 victory. He is the first true freshman since DeShon Elliott in 2015 with two picks in a game, and just the third in school history (also Chris Carter vs. SMU, 1993).
Sterns’ first interception came on a TCU trick play, as he read the pass and jumped in front of a receiver streaking down the sideline for what could have been a touchdown. His second interception came on the first play from scrimmage after UT had taken a 17-16 lead. Sterns intercepted a Shawn Robinson pass and returned it 33 yards to the TCU 2, setting up a Sam Ehlinger keeper to extend the Longhorns’ lead to 24-16 at the end of the third quarter.
Sterns now has three interceptions through four games, tied with Kyle Richardson (1994) for the third-most by a true freshman in school history. Both Quandre Diggs (2011) and Chris Carter (1993) had four as true freshmen.
Riding its first three-game winning streak in a season since 2014, Sterns and the Longhorns hit the road this weekend to take on Kansas State in Manhattan. Kickoff from Bill Snyder Family Football Stadium is set for 2:30 p.m. on FS1.
