lets just get this out of the way first, Texas SHOULD win. Dont let the stat lines fool you, Cal looked like hot garbage against Hawaii for most of that game, and lost to San Diego State. Yea yea yea San Diego is probably not a horrible team. And yea, Webb has thrown for seventy thousand yards. Cal's first two games were against teams that play no defense what so ever. Texas will be much better on D than what they have seen so far. And their D is an absolute nightmare. They let Hawaii's micro running back run straight through them.
I'm not crazy. I know that a young team on the road can vomit on themselves. But they are going to have to try to lose this game. I'm assuming that most of our starters were held out yesterday but could have played. That's a little depth building, and honestly, kind of flexing nuts. If we look like even the B version of ourselves we beat Cal easily. Time to see if this team is going to be consistent enough to be a contender in conference.

Ya'll do realize that Cal has yet to play a home game yet.......

We will be their home opener. Though they may be a dumpster fire on D, they can sling it around the yard to those midget wrs.

Do no sleep on Cal.

I'm not sleeping on them, if we don't play well we can certainly lose, I just don't think they are very good

It all comes down to FB basics, gap integrity, limit arm tackling, avoid stupid penalties and no turn overs. If we do this and play with heart, we win by 14....Hopefully Horns fans will travel..

This should be a game where playing the 18 Wheeler package will pay huge dividends. Fe-Cal is garbage on defense and they are small, our oline should be able to pound them and tackling 3 250 lb backs will ware them out. Then use the passing game to stretch them and we should dominate the stat line.

I think the key is keeping their offense off the field and making it one dimensional. If we can do that it will force them to play to our strength.

I have a feeling we are going to put a lot of pressure on their QB and possibly know him out of the game.

I predict 45-17 victory for the good guys.

I totally agree with you. Run Foreman, CW and Porter right at them. The Horns should be able to pass on them as well. We should see a INT or 2.

THIS Horn fan will be traveling with his boy to that game. It's been many years since my ass has graced Memorial Stadium in Berkeley. The Longhorn players are going to have some damned good football weather, and a whole lot of Texas fans in the seats cheering for them.

I will be there as well with the family. Don't forget to bring a light jacket. The bay area gets a little cool at night.

If this was at DKR Texas would be at least a 14 point favorite, it's a lat kick which sucks and the line opened at Texas -4 with public money pouring in on our Horns it has moved, a lot.

Texas is a much better team than last year

Cal is not

Texas has the ability to pound the rock (they'll run for 300+)

Cal cant stop the run (allowed nearly 600 yards in 2 games)

Texas should be well rested and Cal wont be able to stop our run game which will allow SB to air it out. The corners will finally get tested across the board and in the end, Texas should win with relative ease. We should not see a shootout.

Although, when public money pours in on my team, it makes me start leaning the other way. Had to give a little negative vibe. But, I'll predict a 48-24 final.

Awesome! Do you know where a guy can get some tickets for the OU GAME?

I grew up just south of Berkeley so I know all about Bay Area night time weather. For me it's even worse since I've lived in Nevada for the last 25 years. Up here in the high desert it rarely stays above 25% humidity for a day. I can walk around in 45 degree weather in a t-shirt no problem. Put me in the Bay Area at 60 degrees and 70% humidity and I'm freezing my ass off. Needless to say, I'll be wearing layers with my Texas hoodie on the outside....

I am expecting something like 56 to 28. Cal D is beyond bad. Cal will score enough to make Texas keep scoring and drive the score up. Just run, run, and run again. Cal has no way to stop it.

Just looked at the sack count for both UC games. Hawaii sacked the QB 4 times and SD State 2. If we can get in the back field it WILL be along night for California's QB. Which I bet we'll be camped out most of the night in their backfield!

Please compare the head-to-head match-ups with Cal?
California is No. 3 in total offense averaging 617 yards per game through the first two games behind only Louisville (754 ypg) and Texas Tech (685 ypg) so they bring a high-powered offense into this game regarding “statistics.” California beat a pretty bad Hawaii team 51-31 and lost to San Diego State 40-45. Cal sits at No 95 in the country in rush offense averaging below 100 yards per game. They are No 2 in passing offense at 481 yards per game and check in at No 21 in scoring offense at 46 per game. They are going to score some points in this game and will try and do it through the air.

Defensively is where the game will be won or lost. Cal is 107 in total defense giving up 473 yards per game vs. Hawaii and San Diego State. They are No 125 in rushing defense allowing 291 rushing yards per game, ouch. Scoring D is 109 allowing 38 a game, again vs. less than stellar opponents. Texas sits at No 43 in total offense averaging 466 yards per game and No 53 in rush yards per game at 204 on the ground through the first two games. Texas has the No 46 ranked passing offense at 262 a game through the air. The Longhorns check in at No 21 in scoring offense with 45.5 a game. Defensively, Texas is No 50 in total defense, No 88 in rushing defense at 171 a game, No 27 in passing yards allowed at 155 a game and scoring defense is 27 a game putting them at No 80 in America.

Very simple game plan for me heading into California. Run, run and more running from the Texas ground and pound. They can physically beat Cal up in my mind and MORE importantly, they will need to keep the Cal offense on the sidelines. This will be a true test for me and my thoughts on Sterlin. If there were ever a game where you would want to try and slow down the pace OR at least mix it up at times it’s this game. I do not want to see Texas get into a track meet on the road. I think you will see Texas end the game with 60 + rushing attempts from the backs and QB’s.

Higs -> is the coaching staff worried about the players adjusting to the time zone and are they doing anything planned for it? I say that because the game will start at 9:30 pm CST and end around 1:30 am CST. I realize that it's a different time zone, but it takes me a couple of days to get adjusted. I'm a bit worried that our guys might be tired.
Not at all. This will be more of an issue for them coming home vs. heading out in my opinion.

I agree. Cal offense isn't special, they will just score due to volume of slinging the ball around 50 times. Zero physicality. Will also turn the ball over and have a lot of negative yardage plays. Stereotypical west coast team, with apologies to Stanford.

We should be able to say pick your poison on offense. The only thing that has me worried is we have been very sloppy with penalties these first two games, and our defense is giving up a lot of big plays. This is a game were we would play some ball control, but that's not really this offenses MO.

Big time penalty issues! 11-104 against ND and 10-115 against UTEP. NO BUENO! Hopefully as the season gets deeper we fix those issues.

Some good, some bad, some ugly. Kris Boyd was good for 3 penalties for 35 yards on Saturday and Poona was docked for his bow valued at 15, there's 50 of the 115 against UTEP.

The thing with this offense it that it is designed so that they play is dictated by what the defense is showing, at least when we are running tempo. If they load up to stop the run, in theory, the play should be a pass. The question though, is if they can't stop the run with a loaded box (they can't), do you go against your own offensive philosophy, and run at them anyway? I'm know that the coaches can alter the play from the sideline, I just wonder how much they will be willing to get away from core principals bc the opponent is so bad against the run.

I think if they aren't stopping the run, the 18 wheeler package will be featured a lot. You aren't going to have the big play out of that package unless one of the RBs pops a long run. That package is your clock eater. Swoopes may take a shot or two, but the pass isn't going to be a big threat unless they just abandon pass coverage.

Shane has shown to be deadly accurate with the deep ball so if he's in there taking shots with a productive run game there are going to be a lot of short drives ending up with our defense right back on the field.

I'm not saying Cal isn't a good offensive team, but they have yet to play a team with an actual defense. Texas may not be great on D, but we are going to be miles better than what they have seen so far. Webb is the same Webb you remember. Throws for a ton of yards and multiple picks in a losing effort. Would have to be a complete defensive collapse IMO for this game to be close.

I agree. I wouldn't give the edge to Cal's O over our D, but from Cal's perspective they have to be thinking that a shootout is the only chance they have. With that in mind it's nice to have the option of the 18 wheeler throwing gut punch after gut punch and not necessarily looking for a big play knockout or homerun (insert sports analogy for quick score).

These up tempo spread attacks often sputter when they try to slow down. Hopefully that 18 wheeler package continues to cultivate leaving us with a nice change up this season.

Cal without Goff is a bay area TTech.

yeah, we've lost to tech. don't see your point here.

our secondary is our weak spot. they throw the ball. this will be a good test as the first away game. not gonna put money on this game.
