Texas quarterback commitment Cameron Rising will sign his letter of intent in about two weeks. Rising plans to enroll at Texas in a little more than a month. With those dates rapidly approaching, one might think the Texas coaching staff would have Rising’s recruitment on cruise control heading down the stretch.
Think again.
Texas offensive coordinator Tim Beck did an all-day visit with Rising last week and he’ll be back out in California today to visit the Newbury Park product. Tom Herman is set to go out next weekend.
Rising said the first meeting with Beck went very well, and both he and his parents enjoyed the time with the UT assistant.
“It was awesome. There are actually new rules where we can do more things together. We actually went and had lunch together,” Rising said. “We had a fun time, had lunch, went to the high school, got to visit with my head coach, make sure everything was going good with getting the papers in. Then we made our way to my house, had a good time with my parents.”
Rising has been committed to Texas since April. Other schools do continue to work him and are trying to talk the Rivals100 member into taking a last-minute visit, but Rising said he’s happy with his decision to be a Longhorn.
“I feel great about it. I love Texas,” Rising said. “It’s a great school. I’m looking forward to it.”
The early signing period goes from December 20-22. At this point, Rising isn’t sure when he’ll actually sign, or if he’ll have any sort of ceremony. It will be done in that window, he said, but he may keep it low-key.
“Honestly couldn’t tell you (when he’ll sign),” Rising said. “I don’t want to make a big deal out of it. I just want to get it done and be done with it.”
With only two weekends remaining before the early signing period, Rising says he’s solidly committed to Texas, but he also isn’t completely ruling out the possibility of a last-minute visit elsewhere. Louisiana State and Arizona State continue to work on Rising, and he says he’s not sure what it would take for either school to get him on campus.
“I honestly couldn’t tell you. I’m not going to say something isn’t going to happen, but right now nothing is happening,” Rising said.
As for Texas, Rising has a strong relationship with the UT staff, and he likes what the Longhorns are building.
“It’s just coach Herman, coach Beck. Not to mention how good the academics are,” Rising said. “It’s just a great spot for me. The athletes are going to be ridiculous in this class. It just feels like a good fit.”
Rising suffered a season-ending knee injury in late October, but he hopes to be back to full strength sometime in January. While he would have much rather have been on the field helping his team win games, Rising has stayed positive through the injury and found other ways to help his teammates.
“I just took a different responsibility with my team. I pretty much just helped the younger quarterbacks at the time with anything I could, whether it was ball skills or drops, helping them during a game,” Rising said. “Relaxing them during the game or hyping them up when things go well.”
A four-star prospect, Rising is ranked No. 75 nationally.
