Beard knows how to coach. His guys believe in their philosophy even though it isn't the most exciting brand of basketball to watch. It works though. It's the modern day 4 corners philosophy by shortening the game with limited possessions. They use the entire shot clock on just about every possession. That alone puts a lot of pressure on the opposing team to be much more efficient offensively. There's little room for mental errors or taking bad shots. Couple that with a swarming defense that has a solid rim protector plus they create a ton of turnovers and you have an elite defensive squad.
They play hard-nosed fundamental basketball. They don't run and gun and fire up threes and alley-oop lobs. It's the basketball equivalent of a run-first, and play tough defense and special teams football squad. It's not sexy but if you can control the game this way your opponent is helpless. They know what's coming but still can't stop it.
As for Shaka, he must go. He's all hype and is severely lacking in X's and O's. He made his mark in a conference that was very weak and he had one good team that made it to the Final Four with a team filled with veteran seniors and juniors. There are high school coaches in Texas that could develop players and coach them up better than him. Time for Chris DC to open up the vault and buy him out to rid us of the Steve Patterson failures that are still lingering. We don't necessarily need to bring in a high profile big name coach - just someone that knows how to coach and develop talent. If we did chase a big name, the guy I would try to get is Jay Wright from Villanova. Otherwise, a strong NBA assistant or even a former head coach with both college and NBA experience like Johnny Dawkins.
