AUSTIN, Texas – Freshman running back Chris Warren, III was honored as the Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday for his impressive efforts for the Texas Longhorns on Thanksgiving in a 48-45 loss to Texas Tech.

Warren ran for a Texas freshman record 276 yards in his first career start. He also set two more freshman records with a 91-yard touchdown run for the longest carry by a freshman in school history and scored four touchdowns, also a freshman record. Cedric Benson previously held the freshman rushing record by a Longhorn with 213 yards. Warren’s touchdowns went for 91, 23, 21 and eight yard to average 36 yards per touchdown. In addition to Warren’s 276 yards on the ground on 25 carries, he pulled in two receptions for 12 yards to total 288 yards from scrimmage.

On the year, Warren now has 364 yards rushing and with another strong showing at Baylor on Saturday could crack the Top 15 for yards by a freshman in Texas history despite not seeing significant playing time until injuries to Johnathan Gray and D’Onta Foreman pushed him into the starting role.

Other Big 12 award winners this week were Ty Summers of TCU for defense and K-State’s Morgan Burns for special teams.

This is the fourth Big 12 Player of the Week award this year for Texas. Kick and punt returner Daje Johnson and punter Michael Dickson have each received special team honors, and linebacker Malik Jefferson received defensive player of the week honors after the Longhorns defeated Oklahoma.

Texas travels to Waco this weekend to take on the No. 12/12 Baylor Bears at 11 a.m. The game will be televised on ESPN.
