Very few opponents can make the Rice Owls look like world-beaters, but Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. should probably be one of those rare programs. The bad news for Rice? It was so pathetically bad in 2017 that even competition like ODU was stiff. In fact, the Owls ended up losing the game. The penultimate and putrid cherry on top of a sh*t-sandwich season which would eventually lead to firing of long-time HC David Bailiff.

The only thing worse than the actual football in this one was the ESPN production and broadcast which looked to be overseen by middle-schoolers on some sort of
"career day" where you follow your parents to work.

As for Calvin Anderson specifically: It was a little bit disappointing, especially in a game versus a horrible opponent and also later in the season (November 18th of 2017), that he came into it looking a little bit sluggish.

I hadn't done the work on ODU in the first three games of Anderson's I charted, as I figured it was sure to be a cupcake-type of contest which may have set unreasonable expectations for the work that would follow.

You see, the narrative that Texas fans want to believe about Anderson -- who is now being viewed as an automatic lock to start at LT and a figurative savior of the long-beleaguered Texas OL -- is that he was a guy who improved drastically through his time at Rice and who comes to Texas primed for the big-time. If Anderson started out his first game at Texas in 2018, the same way he came out of the gates versus ODU at the end of the 2017 season, it would certainly not be a good sign. Although Rice ran roughshod on Old Dominion in its first offensive series, Anderson looked sloppy, once taking a bad angle in outside-zone and once losing his feet and nearly causing a run-stuff.

Anderson woke up in the second series and produced a number of impressive snaps from there, mostly in pass-protection, but also continued to show some trouble in the run-game where he allowed a horrible TFL in to start the fourth series by simply getting whooped in close quarters by a stronger, more physical man. No other way to slice it. In fact, the same guy gave Anderson trouble all game. If Anderson is aspiring to one day be an NFL player, perhaps Texas fans should keep the name Oshane Ximines (pronounced Oh-Shane Zim-In-Ess) in the back of their minds as the DE (No.9 for the Monarchs) basically got the best of Anderson for most of the contest, and should also be considered at least at that level. NFLDraftScout.com currently has Ximines ranked as the No.17 projected DE in the 2019 NFL Draft class, so he's clearly one of the more formidable 1v1 matchups Anderson has faced in my work through four games in 2017.

Ximines got to Anderson not only on the sack and the TFL, but also on one of Anderson's worst plays of the game where he allowed Ximines again upfield on a sweep, but the runner this time was able to bounce outside in a way that prevented the down going for a loss. By Rice's final offensive series, Anderson looked beaten up and was hobbled as he went to the ground more and more often and took extra time to return to the huddle gingerly.

In all, it was Anderson's worst performance of the four games graded thus far. The good news is, it was at least an "acceptable" performance, coming in just about the Deep Dig acceptability threshold of 74.5:

66 LT Calvin Anderson vs. ODU - 59 snaps
1 TFL, 1 sack allowed
Disruption allowed once per every 29.5 snaps
DEEP DIG GRADE: 74.66
