I'll be taking off my annual trip to Gulf Shores this year, unfortunately, where I have my croaker spots all lined out. But, I will be in Port A for a few days with the family and intend to murder as many unsuspecting trout and redfish as possible in the flats on the kayak. Also found a new spot recently where I was actually catching a few flounder and those are delicious.
I don't follow hockey, but I'm rooting for the Knights because I want anyone who bought those 500-1 odds to be popping champagne bottles all over the strip when it happens.
It will be the best we've seen at Texas since I can truly ever remember -- at least from a talent and upside perspective. Herman was not BS'ing as I initially postulated when telling TE recruits they were a big part of this offense. He values those guys and involves them. The biggest storyline to follow will be Leitao's development. If you've been at practice you've seen the flashes from that guy and sometimes it takes a year to settle in at that position at the college level.
If you ask me this in a year I'll have a much better answer, I've just now gotten ready to move out to my new home out in the area next week where my HOA gives me lake access. I only have a kayak, but my first crack at it will definitely be just peppering the banks with volume using 6" watermelon worms and hoping I come across a territorial bass in the same way I have had previous success in Town Lake. More to come on this subject for sure.
It depends on type of fan. IF I'm the type who posts on OB -- who really knows the ins and outs of what's going on and what is happening and the nuance of it all -- I wouldn't be buying a damn thing until I saw it with my own two eyes. If I were a casual fan? Of course I would be drinking the Kool-Aid. That is what passive, casual fans do.
I know Ketchum loves Garrett Wilson and I've seen him live and think he's great, too. I should preface by saying that I don't like making definitive statements about prospects until I see them live at any level. It has been what has differentiated my company, RosterWatch, from other NFL/Draft entities in that we travel to see everyone. I feel even more strongly about this corollary in high schoolers and I have not seen Jake Smith live. With that said, I don't think anyone can say that Wilson's HUDL highlights are more impressive than Smith's. Based on the knowledge available to me at this time, I take Jake Smith.
First of all, thank you for reading the columns.
This will be the Daily Short tomorrow, it's a regular in the rotation of Daily Short topics and themes. This is a chat column that can serve both as a chat and as a bit of a column in answering questions. I understand if you don't like it as much as a traditional column and for that I apologize. Lots of people have very differing opinions on my work and I know that comes with the job.
The schedule for the Daily Short in-season goes like this:
MON: nothing (I'm usually finishing up film work by TUES or so, but Monday is complete Texas film day)
TUES: Defensive Market Share Breakdown and Rankings
WED: Offensive Skill Player Snap Counts and Thoughts
THURS: OL Thoughts and Grades
FRI NIGHT/SAT AM (LATE): "Gameday" Column (a column about the game to come now that my work on the previous week is done).
So, that means, I'm on the hook for basically four pieces of written content per week which is not quite "daily," in-week, but pretty close. This on top of the podcasts and, when applicable, War Room contributions and stuff like the game predictions, staff special pieces, etc.
In the offseason, that means that four out of five days during the work week, I'll post a Daily Short, but I don't always have the schedule totally mapped out. Most frequently, I'll take Thursday off as Ketch has a morning column that day but it all just depends on all kinds of different factors.
I would have never thought the Daily Short would have taken off with so many people reading it (almost) every day, but Ketchum knew even after the first one that was a disaster that it could be a good idea.
Again, I appreciate you reading. This is my column for Friday and you've helped me write it for anyone else who is interested when they log on tomorrow morning.
I did it for movies in (I believe) 2015 with my wife as we made a goal to watch all of the ones up for Oscars. If Manchester by the Sea was a football prospect, I would have rated him a 2-star, replacement-level option.
I can't even begin to talk about how much my "failed" musical career meant to me.
I'll channel Ketch and pull a Top 10 of experiences/memories, etc.
1) Met my wife. (rare show in 'Nam)
2) Spent time in every state in the lower 48 excluding Maine.
3) Got paid to take three cruises and play a show on each (big payoff memory-wise)
4) Got paid to play shows in Napa at vineyards and drink the finest wines imaginable (again like cruises)
5) Played Red Rocks
6) Recorded a Record at Avatar Studios with a Grammy-winning producer. Turned down the opportunity to use one of Paul McCartney's basses on that album
7) Can murder a song I co-wrote on Guitar Hero
8) Walked the red carpet in NYC for a Disney movie opening
9) Played Highway Patrol on-stage at Antone's with Junior Brown
10) Played at the pool at Mandalay Bay
Caden Sterns looks like he'll have the greatest impact as of now. Injuries at the outside CB positions could change that for A Cook. I haven't yet seen D Overshown so I reserve the right to change that once I do.
Graham - I project for now that he'll be a 40-45% snap participant at the nose and/or 3-tech depending on situation barring injury to Chris Nelson and/or (to some degree) Charles Omenihu.
I think Herman interjects more into the picture and the answer is yes.
That's a tough one. No QBs again, right?
Will Locke? I'm not sure. If we're picking four I'll guess
Hager, Gary Johnson, Patrick Vahe, Jerrod Heard

Getting ready for croaker Fishing at the coast buddy? I know you have an affinity for that trout thump
I'll be taking off my annual trip to Gulf Shores this year, unfortunately, where I have my croaker spots all lined out. But, I will be in Port A for a few days with the family and intend to murder as many unsuspecting trout and redfish as possible in the flats on the kayak. Who wins tonight? Vegas or Washington? If Vegas, do the Caps win the Cup back at home?
I don't follow hockey, but I'm rooting for the Knights because I want anyone who bought those 500-1 odds to be popping champagne bottles all over the strip when it happens.
TE position group this year....your thoughts.
It will be the best we've seen at Texas since I can truly ever remember -- at least from a talent and upside perspective. Herman was not BS'ing as I initially postulated when telling TE recruits they were a big part of this offense. He values those guys and involves them. Best summertime fishing technique for Lake Travis?
If you ask me this in a year I'll have a much better answer, I've just now gotten ready to move out to my new home out in the area next week where my HOA gives me lake access. I only have a kayak, but my first crack at it will definitely be just peppering the banks with volume using 6" watermelon worms and hoping I come across a territorial bass in the same way I have had previous success in Town Lake. More to come on this subject for sure.
If you were strictly a fan, not a journalist, would you be drinking burnt orange kool-aid?
It depends on type of fan. IF I'm the type who posts on OB -- who really knows the ins and outs of what's going on and what is happening and the nuance of it all -- I wouldn't be buying a damn thing until I saw it with my own two eyes. Jake Smith or Garrett Wilson?
I know Ketchum loves Garrett Wilson and I've seen him live and think he's great, too. Why no Daily Short? Is the schedule Mon-Fri? Appreciate your work, effort, and time. Miss it when not there

Besides football player performances, what other phenomena do you track and log, in those little spreadsheets of yours?
I did it for movies in (I believe) 2015 with my wife as we made a goal to watch all of the ones up for Oscars. If Manchester by the Sea was a football prospect, I would have rated him a 2-star, replacement-level option.
What was your favorite moment as a musician? If it wasn’t a particular concert, which show was the most memorable to you?
I can't even begin to talk about how much my "failed" musical career meant to me.

Which of the freshman DBs do you expect to have the greatest impact this coming season?
What are your expectations for Taquon Graham this season? Can he work his way into a starting role?
Do you expect Kevin Durant to finish his career with finals average shooting percentages of 50,40,90? He currently has career finals averages of FG% .5535, 3P% .444 , and FT% .9032

Will the Texas offense be top 3 in the big 12?
I think Herman interjects more into the picture and the answer is yes.
Which players will represent Texas at big 12 media days?
That's a tough one. No QBs again, right?
