With no GAMEDAY column tomorrow due to the 11am start, here is the recap of the week that was in the Short ...

TUESDAY - Deshon Elliott and the NFL (Updated Defensive Player Rankings)

WEDNESDAY - Heard at X? Warren at TE? Skill Player Breakdown

THURSDAY - Cuney/Shackelford Mystery (OL Thoughts and Grades)

I'll answer your questions here for the next hour to make a community chat column. When answering the questions, I'll copy and paste them here in the OP to make it an easer-to-read column once the chat has ended. Ask me anything for the next hour. I'll make a note in the thread when the chat portion is over after an hour or so.

Do you think Beck will get the Tennessee job?

It might be the happiest Texas fans have ever been about a hire at another school ...

Fair to say the starting line up on the OL should be:
Williams, Vahe, Shackleford, Mcmillon, Kerstetter

Yes, that is by far the optimal grouping.

As the attendance has shown...apathy has set in and firmly rooted.

Well, the column is called the Daily Short, this one might really live up to its name.

Rephrase question above..do you think Orlando will get the Tennessee job?

I haven't heard that, I'm sure that would be a position he would definitely interview for and consider if he was a candidate -- absolutely. However, I think that Texas fans, when speculating over positions Orlando might leave for, should remember that he is thought to eventually be interested in the NFL. I personally think that his ultimate next stop would be as an NFL DC.

Who is the best team in college football right now in your opinion?

Alabama as usual these days.

With the perception that Shane would be a better passing option and Sam a better run/improvise option, why would it be circulating that Shane starts when it looks like bad weather/rain? I would think that would lend itself to more of a ground game.

I think the reports that Shane is likely to start have to do with the stuff we're hearing coming out of practice this week. If I was going to tell you what I thought made the most sense, I would of course say Ehlinger regardless of any rain or weather. Sam is the better quarterback and better option if the team wants to come out with a win assuming he's healthy.

Alex, I know TH says no staff changes, and in reality I'm not totally convinced that Beck is the only or main culprit on the offensive strategic front. But can they keep running Beck out to say the ludicrous crap he says and maintain any credibility for him or the offensive staff. How much eye rolling happens in the press room when he's out front?

Anwar is our team's beat reporter who is in attendance for all of those events so I don't really know about the eye-rolling personally. I know that the recaps of his availabilities certainly seem to get the community around here pissed off - and in many cases, rightfully so. Texas fans take their allegiances seriously and don't like getting peed on while being told it's raining.

The times I was watching Chris Warren block, he seemed meh, what did you think?

He looked like a guy playing a new position for the first time. While I agree with you that he didn't look to be going 100% at all times, I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt in assuming that maybe it was hesitancy due to lack of confidence in assignments and proper technique. Certainly something to monitor as we finish out this season.

Is there any realistic way that we could pick up Rumlin as OC after he gets whacked by the sheep humpers?

Absolutely not, if you're being serious and not trolling. I think that Herman has lost a *small* bit of political capital of the type he used when making uncomfortable initial hires like Casey Horny, due to a failing season out of the gate. I think, even if Herman wanted Sumlin, the powers-that-be at UT would 1) find the whole thing to feel a little icky; and 2) would have concerns about reports of drinking that have been attributed at times to Sumlin.

you think Warren transfers?

The last time I made a post about possible attrition candidates, I was called out by numerous posters, some even -- ridiculously -- calling for my job like a lynch mob. I don't understand it just like I don't understand why half of the other stuff I do that ruffles feathers does indeed rustle jimmies; but I do know that I don't write about potential attrition anymore.

Why hasn't Herman moved on Landry? Its not like we have an abundance of Defensive lineman lined up.

I'll get all caught up on recruiting once the football season ends and use that research as inspiration for these columns at that time, but in-season, these sorts of questions should be directed @Suchomel. I honestly probably know less than you do about what Texas is doing and who's still available on the board, etc. I do agree that no stone should be left unturned regarding linemen on either side of the football.

Purely speculation, do you think this group could produce a 100 + yard rushing day tomorrow?

As a unit? I think if we're talking about a combined yardage total - then I think that goal is certainly within grasp, but it will take a commitment to the run that the staff has not shown in games with competitive opponents. I expect Tim Beck to do what he does and abandon the run game at the first sign of adversity and negative game script. So, while I do think that is an attainable goal, I would take the under if forced to bet on it.

How many offensive plays do we completely waste on Saturday? Aka Porter run plays.

I think Texas will abandon the run in this one, because as mentioned in the post above, what do we have to point to as evidence that they won't? So, in this scenario, that will mean more Porter in the game as a pass-protector-type back. While getting those snaps, a sporadic run would be mixed in here or there. So I'd say 8.

Alright, hour's up and all the questions have been answered outside of the curb-stomp scenario I decided to leave out. ; ) thanks to all for contributing to the column this week, this will bring the chat portion to an end. The Short will be back Tuesday with updated Defensive Rankings post-WVU.

Enjoy your football this weekend.
