Students at a Washington, D.C. elementary school were instructed by a staff member to reenact scenes from the Holocaust Friday, according to the Washington Post.

When the third-grade students asked why the Germans killed Jews, the staff member said it was “because the Jews ruined Christmas.”

The students at Watkins Elementary School were supposed to be working on projects in the library Friday when the staff member told the students to reenact scenes from the Holocaust.

The woman reportedly told one student, who is Jewish, to play the role of Adolf Hitler and to pretend to commit suicide. Another student was told to pretend that he was on a train to a concentration camp and then to act as if he were dying in a gas chamber.

Paul Packer, chairman of the US Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad, wrote Dr. Lewis D. Ferebee, chancellor of DC Public Schools, a letter condemning the incident.

"Your administration and the school’s inaction are dangerous—because in your passivity, you quietly sanction this behavior as a simple error, instead of seeing it for what it is: A display of rank anti-Semitism," Packer wrote. "Your own spokesperson’s apology— “This was not an approved lesson plan”—vastly understates the danger. By casually referring to this as a “lesson plan,” by not immediately making an example out of this employee, and by not loudly sending a message to other schools in your charge, you are feeding the resurgence of anti-Semitism and giving it cover."
