Devin Duvernay met with the media at the NFL combine on Tuesday for his media availability. Here is a transcription of his answers to the questions asked by an assortment of members of the national credentialed NFL media:
(Ready to run real fast for this thing?)
Yeah, I'm excited.
(Numbers you're shooting for?)
I guess I'll just surprise you all.
(No target number?)
Just trying to go sub-4.4.
(How fast have you gone?)
I've been in the 4.3's.
(Coach said you run angry; where does that come from?)
Just the passion I have for the game and being a competitor. Just competing and wanting to punish my opponent.
(Any frustration with slow start to your Texas career?)
Not really any frustration, just the development, getting better and taking advantage of my opportunities.
(What does that say about your pro prospects?)
You just got to keep working. Where you're at now is not where you're going to end up, so keep working and never be satisfied.
(Difference last year compared to previous years)
The position change helped. We were pretty slot-heavy, a slot-friendly offense, so that contributed and being a better player, maturing and developing and being a better receiver.
(Where are you training/who's your agent?)
Bullet in Dallas. / Erik Burkhardt
(Relationship with Collin Johnson, how are you challenging each other this week?)
We're best friends, we're always together, been around each other all the time, we came in together, left together and we always push each other, like in practice, we push each other to be great, to make plays, be the monster we knew we both could be. It's been a fun ride having him alongside of me.
(Finish off up-and-down season with Alamo Bowl win)
That was good. That was the main goal going into bowl practice was to send the seniors out with a win. We did that, we all came together and did it for each other.
(What's your strength coming out in the slot?)
Running after the catch.
(Any offenses you look at in the NFL and think you fit?)
Not necessarily. I haven't thought that far.
(Anybody you compare yourself to?)
I'm not too big on comparisons, honestly, I just try to be the best version of myself and do what I can to put my team in position to win or score points.
(Anybody you look at in the NFL?)
I watch a lot of people, just watching games because I like watching football, seeing different types of styles to try and put in my game.
*Says he hasn't met with Patriots here*
(What do you like about the slot?)
You go deep, you go short, you get in the screen game, be in the backfield, things like that, I like doing that, things to get the ball in your hands early, make a play, run after the catch.
(What are you looking to prove this week?)
Continue to develop as a route runner and show I've got skills there.
*Two meetings tomorrow (Wed) and one with 49ers yesterday (Mon)*
*No convos with Cowboys*
(One catch in college that shows who you are?)
I guess the catch against Maryland, junior year, first touchdown.
(Were you a Cowboys fan growing up?)
I wasn't really a fan of a team growing up, honestly, I just liked more watching the game and that aspect, but I didn't have a team I cheered for.
(Any players you grew up watching?)
I was a real big Steve Smith fan growing up.
*Informal meeting with Texans*
(Was it disappointing team-wise to step back this year for Texas?)
Obviously the goal is to get to the Big 12 championship, to compete in that, but we wanted to hopefully win some more games but we did what we could and it is what it is, you can't do anything about it now, but we ended it off with a win at the Alamo Bowl and we can't ask for much more.
(Ran the entire route tree at Texas?)
I think so.
(Something you hope to prove)
Of course. I'm continuing to get better at that and work on the all-around game to be a complete player.
(What are you going to run tomorrow?)
Hopefully 4.3-something. We'll see.
(Competitive in deep WR class?)
There's always competition. I think I can compete with the best of them. I'm going to keep being me, keep doing me and let my game and myself speak for itself.
(Coming into the league at perfect time with teams valuing versatility)
I think it probably is the right time, teams are using receivers in different ways, smaller guys and stuff like that, but I'm just going to make the most of my opportunity and have fun doing it.
(What makes a great slot receiver)
I guess a guy that's tough, physical and can run after the catch and make things happen without just catching the deep ball.
(What do you try to convey in interviews?)
Just that I'm a chill, genuine person, just be myself and let them know I mean well and I know what I'm talking about.
(What do you want to make sure teams remember about you when you leave here?)
That he plays hard and gives it all and he's going to do whatever he can.
(What is this moment like for you?)
It's a dream and a bit anxious because it's something you watch every year growing up and now you're actually here. Kind of surreal. I'm excited and happy and I'm going to make the most of it.
(Anyone you've reached out to through this process?)
I talked to a couple of my old teammates to see how it was, see what to expect and they said be yourself. Long days but you'll get through it and it will be fun.
(Waiting period between this week and the draft?)
Nerve-wracking, just waiting, not really knowing what's going to happen, who's going to get you, but it will be nerve-wracking.
*Hasn't thrown with Kyler Murray (related)*
(Competition with Kyler growing up?)
Not really. We'd get together on family holidays and stuff and throw and stuff, but nothing too major.
*Will do everything here except bench / will bench at pro day*
(Hardest DB to go against at Texas)
The best one I went against was a couple years ago, Holton Hill.
