Did L-State (just) make a big mistake?

Here is the issue.

Over the last 5 seasons LSU hasn't lost more than 3 games. That is a tough act to follow and that in a division with Alabama. Even a great coach would think twice about taking that job. LSU has some great recruiting advantages but that might not be enough to pull a great coach.

Do you remember what happened when Corn canned F. Solitch?

Louisiana produces huge quantities of blue chips prospects. Nebraska produces huge quantities of something else, because they don't have many prospects at all. Apples and Oranges.
LSU is a prime job. Only coach's who fear competition would not think LSU was a great job. There are easier paths to winning, but you will have great players to work with at LSU.

They will likely land a big name. But be dissapointed in the results. It's tough sledding to get through the SEC with less than 2 losses and that's apperently not good enough.

Like with athletes, I would be suspect of any coach that based his decision on what competition a particular school would face. An athlete is looking at showcasing himself for the League. He will have a 3 or 4 year stay.

A coach is looking for a top tier gig, and there are very few of those. LSU is one of those gigs.Being in the same division with Saban would be a non factor to me if I was a coach offered that job......If I believed in myself, I would see that everything I needed to become successful was right there.

I don't necessarily disagree with you. And I have no doubt that Tom Herrman, Jimbo fisher, etc can win big at LSU. I'm sure they have no doubt about that either. The problem is the expectations from the admin appear to be bigger than reality. That creates some issues.

If I'm a Tom Herrman maybe I do go

If I'm Jimbo Fisher, Dabo, Patterson I don't know that i leave my current situation. I have heard that Jimbo isn't all that happy at FSU so maybe that factors in as well

Agree 100% LSU is a Top 10 job. What are you going to do - wait for Saban or Urban Meyer to retire for a "better" job? And BTW - beat Saban and it IS a better job. And BTW BTW - Saban is 64 years old. He won't coach forever.

Here is my opinion on this. I think LSU made a huge blunder.

Not in firing Miles, let's face it, Les isn't that great of a coach, but the timing of doing it was absolutely stupid. Now you have an interim-coach who will likely go 6-2 or even 8-0 over the last 8 games. If he only loses one game or goes undefeated their hand will be forced to make him the head coach when in truth he is no better than Les.

They choose not to hire him and they will alienate recruits and lots of players in his corner.

Secondly, Miles had an incredible record at LSU, any coach that takes that job will know that 10 wins isn't enough to keep that job. It's a lot to ask for any coach. I think many of the big name guys are going to pass the job for that reason.

Is it a great job, heck yea it is, but it comes with a lot of baggage. I would compare it to the really really super hot girl that is just bat shit crazy. At some point, beauty and super hot sex doesn't compensate for all the shit you have to put up with.

I whole heartedly agree. Look at Baylor - we have an interim coach and ... no one on the recruiting trail. No one. Every assistant knows they won't be back next year. Every recruit knows they won't. So there is nothing happening. The next coach is handcuffed. LSU just put itself in the same situation. Why do that to yourself? When UT hired Strong, Brown left him with commits, and Strong just needed to work to keep the commits. LSU will be aiming high, which means no coach will be hired until December at the very earliest (unless possibly Briles, the only coach out there currently unemployed). Good luck pulling together a class in less than a month.

They still have games @Florida @A&M and home games with Bama, Ole Miss and Arky. They aren't going 6-2 and they sure as hell are not going 8-0. I think everyone with any sense realizes Ed Orgeron isn't going to be the next coach. LSU is not that good of a team. They were grossly overrated in pre-season polls and they got exposed early. They have no offense due to horrible QB play and that isn't changing just because Miles and Cameron have now been fired. I could easily see them going 4-4 to finish.

Miles had the tremendous misfortune of following Saban and then facing Saban annually in the same division. To his credit he got his national title before Saban got hot. But after that they were not even competitive with Bama even with the talent he was able to pull in.

If LSU's wish list starts with Meyer, Saban and Fisher they are going to be disappointed. There is no recent precedent for a top coaching making a lateral move from one top program to another, just doesn't happen. They have to be all in on Herman. I cant see them holding their nose to hire Petrino or Briles.

Idk LSU appears to be putting winning above all. In that case Pertino of Briles are good bets. They'll win big at LSU...ethics are another question.

One down. Meyer said tonight he has not been contacted and will be the coach at OSU period. Remember. he's an Ohio native.

You think Petrino wants back in the SEC's west division?

If I'm LSU, and I have no morals or scruples, then I go after him.

I've had an epiphany. Hear me out:

LSU has made no bones about it. They want to hire an offensive guru to shake things up and perhaps put a little fear in the heart of Saban. That's a tall order-- but I know one guy that can do it. I know one dude with the requisite tools and knowledge to make Nick's life very difficult.
He's currently coaching an offensive juggernaut that's not going to win more than 5-6 games because his defense is so terrible. Dudes offense can throw the damn ball. With the athletes at LSU, defense won't be a problem--- and with his coaching style, neither will offense- if he's hired. He's already got a skin on the wall in the form of a championship and a little ancillary bonus is, he probably wouldn't even have to sell his house and move. The bad news is LSU is going to have to break out the check book. I mean REALLY break out the check book. After all Sean Payton is making 7 mil a year coaching the saints.

Think about it..... the saints are done. Yes Drew can still sling it, but his career is on its last leg. There's no b other coach that would be praised, hell, revered as much as Payton would. He's a true hero of Louisiana and it's people. How can lsu pass on that opportunity??

Well yeah. I don't think it's a matter of LSU passing on that opportunity. Payton strikes me as a lifetime NFL guy. He didn't go to a major university and never coached at a major university. He had a string of assistant coaching jobs at various smaller colleges and hasn't looked back as soon he got in the NFL.

That would be a home run. I can't remember who on this board was pushing for Payton to come to Texas. At the time, he was on his year long hiatus for bounty gate.

Briles has been contacted

I was told from a friend that an LSU plane was seen in West Virginia and he is part of the leach tree and thinking of Leach,he might give Saban a little hell.
