So much is said and written that these days present unprecedented divisiveness and political savagery. I would argue that is not so.

First, in terms of political savagery, well, politics has always been a blood sport; be it American politics or in the history of the world. Horrible things have always been exchanged between vying political forces in America. Heck, fights and duels used to break out in Congress. Horrible things were said about Lincoln, Reagan, LBJ, etc. one of my favorite attacks was the one asserted against FDR in the midst of WWII about his dog:

I loved FDR handled it. I loves the way Reagan handled attacks on his age:

As for the divisiveness in the country, yeah, it’s bad right now. But it’s been worse. Think about 1968. The Viet Nam war. MLK’s assassination. The ensuing riots. RFK’s assasination. The 1968 Democratic convention. The country was in absolute turmoil.

But the Republic survived and indeed, was stronger for it. I believe in our system of government. I believe in our Republic. And I believe we will survive this period, and come out stronger. We have some serious challenges ahead, but all is not lost.

What scares me most is our mounting debt and deficits.
