There has been considerable thought put into this so as to not cause anything other than thoughtful consideration. The current American and to an extent Western World debate seems to have coalesced around an unspoken divide. There are those who believe in ethnic or sexual identity as a fundamental feature of themselves or their nation, and those that do not. This is not a left-right issue. Identity politics on the left preceded that on the right in this current go-round, and it is still much stronger. In the USA and UK white identity politics have for the first time in decades resulted in direction changing elections and there is much consternation about that.

The history of the world's peoples has been one of ascendancy, supremacy, decadence, tragedy, migration, invasion, plague, war, and famine interrupting technological and intellectual progress across most of the word. There are more isolated places like Japan, Sub-Saharan Africa, Pre-Colombian America, Islands, etc, but in large parts of populated Earth that has been the cycle. People that try to rely on birthright, tradition, etc. have been overtaken by those hungrier for land or opportunity since day one. All borders are going to be porous to some degree outside of a true totalitarian state, and those have limited lifespans.

This does not intend to address policy issues at the border, but rather the general way to win or make America great. Those who do it, if it will be done, are going to be highly motivated people adapting to technological change and intellectual developments, whether it be those that think they should should have right to the land or those who want it and are better able to adapt to the times.

There is the fear in democracy, particularly welfare state rich democracies, that the hungry and uneducated hordes from abroad will come and abuse that largesse and through the vote kill the cow that makes the milk. That situation is possible in the United States because of our proximity to impoverished parts of the world, our humanitarian bent, and our global attraction to immigrants. My belief is that for a Central American or African to make it here implies something that his fellow countrymen lack, which is some ingenuity, money, persistence, etc.. There is a risk in immigration. South Africa is showing the world how an aggrieved party acts when it becomes the majority, and also what happens to the country when those most able to manage it are marginalized politically. If we become a nation where those whose only desire to be here is economic and who harbor antipathy towards what the Unites States has been are a majority, there is some real risk. On the other hand, that risk is mitigated by the struggles those immigrants face to get here. The selection of more motivated and talented people takes place well outside of the border.

In the long run, America will be populated and run by those that want it the most and create and ride progress regardless of ethnic identity. The war of the sexes will never end, and we are now in a very public version of it. Secure borders are important for many reasons, but if we who already live here want to make ourselves great we need to somehow regain the hunger and desire of our forefathers that we now see in the poor immigrants from all over the world. It is hard to be hungry when you are full, though.
