it was announced this afternoon. He was obviously a good coach but he was an ***hole. I'm not sure why he got selected to the basketball HoF. Yes he got in the final 4 three times but he never advanced to the title game. And then there was the scandal at KY when he was the coach there. Mostly it was his attitude towards the TX Longhorns.
In 1983 TX had the worst basketball team in school history. Actually it was the worst team in the history of TX athletics. This was the beginning of college hoops and ESPN so I got to watch it on tv. I don't remember the final score but it was awful. Mostly what I remember most was AR was ahead. by like 40 and they were playing pressure defense. I also remember thinking I hope we have an opportunity to pay back Eddie for this game.
Fourteen years later and now ES is the hc at OSU. The SWC had died and now TX is in the Big XII and they get to play ES twice a year. And wouldn't you know it our first Big XII hoops game is against none other than OSU and Eddie Sutton. I was never a big Bill Schoening fan but he had a classic line at the beginning of the game. "and ES walks into a heart felt chorus of boos". Well I wasn't the only one who remembered that game and the other games that ES did against us. Anyway we finally got some payback. We did the exact same thing to ES that ES did to us. Ahead by 40 and playing pressure d. And the crowd at the Erwin was into this from the get go. At the end of the game they chanted poor Eddie you know like poor aggies. And they had other taunts for him the whole game. He lied when he said it didn't bother him. When you're being taunted like that it's guaranteed to get under your skin. One of my all time favorite wins in TX hoops.
