It’s a getting to be cruncthime for top wide receiver Elijah Higgins.
Higgins, a Rivals250 member, has kept fans guessing on where he’ll play his college ball, but the Austin Bowie standout said this week that he’s closing in on a decision, and there are three teams making a mad dash for the finish line.
“My final schools that I’m considering are Texas, Stanford and Florida,” Higgins said. “I plan to announce within the next five days. I don’t know how just yet.”
On Friday, Texas assistant coaches Drew Mehringer and Jason Washington paid Higgins an in-home visit. It was another chance for the Longhorns to build on their already strong relationship, and Higgins said the visit went well overall.
“The home visit was great. It was just a hangout type of night,” Higgins said. “No recruiting pitches, just hanging out.”
Early in the process, many believed Higgins would stay in Austin and play for Texas. Florida started to create a buzz over the summer and of late, Stanford has been the hot pick. According to Higgins, his mind is not yet been made up.
“It’s been a consistent teeter to between the schools for the most part,” Higgins said.
With only a few days remaining before the start of the early signing period, Higgins hopes to settle on one school and come to a final decision. He’ll sign his letter of intent next week and will then turn his attention towards the Under Armour All-American Bowl.
“The process for me making the big final decision is letting it come to me,” Higgins said. “I’m strong in my faith and beliefs and when the time is right I’ll know I’m making the right choice 100 percent.”
Whoever wins the race land one of the nation’s top receivers, a 6-3, 215-pounder who is a physical mismatch for smaller defensive backs. Higgins is a four-star prospect.
Note: I'll have more thoughts on this one tomorrow, but Texas is closing strong here. Will it be enough to win out and beat a Stanford program that's been thought to be the clear leader? I'm not sure, but there is some nervousness from the Stanford side that the Longhorns have made this a dead heat down the stretch.
