If you missed the 1st half, it can be found HERE. Less pass attempts in the 2nd half as it became about possessions and the clock. We had 6 possessions in the 1st half and only 4 in the second half with the final possession becoming more about killing the clock to win the game and less about putting the ball in the endzone to expand the lead.
In the first half we did very little to establish the run and Sark came out determined in the 2nd half to do just that running the ball two times in a row to start our first possession. We'll take a look at all the pass plays but it's key to point out that Blue's production in the second half is probably the critical reason we were able to move the ball more effectively.
Pass 1 - An effective run game creates opportunities like this. Arkansas gets out of the 3 high zone look and goes to a man coverage here on 3rd and short and completely blows it. Nobody goes with the back and we have Golden coming free on the mesh. Easy money.
Pass 2 - Another opportunity against man and Ewers just misses this one filling the space where the defender blitzes from. I don't necessarily love the fact that this is Helm trying to beat a DB. He has the size but if this were a WR it's a free run into the end zone. Regardless, Ewers needs to put this on his numbers and it's a bad throw.
Pass 3 - Two-man TE concept up top and they just run nearly into the same area. Miscommunication on the play call as someone did not run the correct route. Everything else is dead, Wingo needs to hang on to this for a minimal gain as 3rd and 9 is better than 3rd and 12.
Pass 4 - Again with the 3 high look on 3rd and long. Wingo is coming underneath here but it's not enough for a 1st down. Helm is doing the right thing but the Middle LB is leaking his direction off the hash and the CB is peeping this one to jump it. Ewers want's Bolden here and if Bolden quits running into coverage, and does the same thing Helm is doing, this is an easy first down. This is basic level zone defense recognition. Bolden has to see this. Banks gets blown by. Ewers escapes and puts a ball on the money that gets dropped by Bolden. These are the areas of the game where we miss J-Witt.
Pass 5 - This is a really good play call against the 3 high. Bond hasn't played a great game so far but this is an excellent route. If you watch him through the route he sells this as him takin off deep and then he just comes back in the zone. Ewers working this right to left and this might be his first perfect rep of the day when you include things like footwork, pocket awareness, and timing.
Pass 6 - Wants Helm in the middle of the field first but it's locked up. Referenced this on a play in the fist half where Quinn and Helm were not able to connect near the sideline. Davis gets outside the numbers and then comes back, and my personal belief is that this is what Helm needed to do in the first half. Sark likes people catching the ball on the move. Taking what you can get here. Ewers has everything cooking with his footwork.
Pass 7 - Not a lot needs to be said here. This is just a fantastic throw and catch. Golden has some hands on him.
Pass 8 - Not in love with this play call as this is a low percentage shot when we need to possess the ball. However this is a misread by Quinn and he needs to rip this thing to Wingo at the top of the screen. He finally has nobody underneath him. We don't know what's called through the headset here but Bolden isn't the guy you want to be taking the deep shots to.
Pass 9 - Sark earning that paycheck. We know they are going to bail out and we know they need to make a stop here to get the ball back so the D-line is going to have their ears pinned back to get to Ewers. Just a beautiful play call and very good execution. Welcome back to the show Blue.
Ball game. 20-10.
Again, some good, some bad, some great in the passing game from Quinn. When the offense sputters at times he is the reason. More often than not, he is not the reason. On to take a look at the Kentucky defense which has been nasty at times this season.
