Regarded by many as the most viewed photograph in history, this image embodies an iconic moment in Marine Corps history. On this day in 1945, Marines accomplished the formidable task of ascending Mount Suribachi, where they ceremoniously raised the American flag. The battle, which had commenced six days prior, would continue unabated until March 26th. The Iwo Jima battle was a protracted and brutal conflict, ultimately claiming the lives of 6,000 Americans on the island's rugged terrain.

Semper Fidelis Marines.
