An angler from Corpus Christi caught a 53-pound Warsaw grouper during a nine-hour trip in Port Aransas on Tuesday, according to the Dolphin Docks Deep Sea Fishing boat captain Michael Matthew.

Warsaw groupers are critically endangered, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration also listed the fish as a species of concern.

If it is critically endangered, why did they kill it?
Pretty sure the guides just saw a "grouper" and thought "oh cool, a nice grouper that you can filet out and have a heckuva fish fry with"---- and once they got it ashore, someone told them what they had. There's 1500 species of fish in the Gulf. Most marine biologists don't know them all.
 
Swim bladder probably broke while being brought up by an electric reel.
