Last week Cal lost a close one to San Diego State, 45-40. With 56 seconds left in the game, the Golden Bears scored to close within five. The ensuing onside kick was successful; but senior quarterback Davis Webb (6-5/230) ended all hope by throwing his third interception of the night.

Cal racked up 604 total yards, passing for 522 in a school record 72 attempts and rushing for 82. The Aztecs were able to post 463 yards via 129 passing and 334 rushing.

On offense, look for Texas to reprise their nostrum damas gameplan and concuss the defensive line with its Smash Bros and Peterbilt weapons.

Defensively, the 'Horns should employ their own version of Iron Dome while applying pressure up front to the Bears' no-threat-to-run quarterback.

What to expect:
  • Kyle Porter breaks a +24 yarder.
  • Sheroid Evans has a PBU and gets his first pic.
  • Breckyn Roach Highlight Hits videos will be for sale in the Co-op on Monday.
  • Texas rushes for over 280 while Boo cashes in on 3 TDs.
  • Longhorns skin the Bears 44-20.
Weather forecasts show a high of 73° with a low of 56° on Saturday.

HOOK 'EM!

Good talk up on Cal. I think our DB's has been tested by ND but Cal will test the secondary. If the DL and LB blitzes gets pressure on Cal QB, the boys should win easily. If no pressure is applied on the QB, it should get shaky. I expect the boys will get a 40+ points and give up 2 TD's or less. If Foreman comes back, it will be another 100 yard day. Warren could have a 100 as well.

We talked with some of our sources in the football offices to get the latest on the team.
  • The coaches feel pretty good about the way the team played despite it being an obvious trap situation. Texas was without a number of their players, and they responded on both sides of the ball. The biggest issue right now is with the number of penalties and unforced errors. The team is working to clean that up.
  • Speaking of missing players, we were told that a number of the players held out against UTEP were not dealing with serious injuries. Many of them were precautionary measures to make sure the team is as healthy as possible before a tough segment of their schedule.
  • There is some concern about how the team will respond to their first road game. Cal does have an explosive offense, and a late night start on the west coast could present some challenges. The young players on the team (especially Shane Buechele) have responded at every turn so far.
  • Expectations are starting to rise within the fan base, but the team is reminded that they have to play consistently week to week.
  • Expect to see some shuffling among the reserves on the offensive line. One of the real disappointments from Saturday was the pass protection from that group. The Achilles heel of this team could be the lack of quality depth at key positions, the offensive line being first and foremost.

That's cool and all but against Hawaii and SD State. What I see is a lot of turnovers from Cal which will doom them with our clock mgmt. Their QB threw 3 INT's out of their 4 turnovers. 72 passing attempts is a lot but as long as we use the clock with running and score after their turnovers this game should be put to bed early and hopefully some more playing time for the bench.

What I'm hoping for is to hear a highlight video with Texas touchdown at least 5+ times through out the video. Similar to this one.

INJURIES
What I was told on D'Onta Foreman and Holton Hill is they'll be fine for Cal and that they had very minor issues keeping them out of the UTEP game. So we'll go with that.

Kent Perkins and Connor Williams will be back next Saturday. Perkins' knee issue isn't bad and Williams would have been playing if this was ten years ago but concussions are literally nothing to play with.

Also making his return will be Caleb Bluiett. With all the returns we can expect a return to the Notre Dame run game.

OFFENSE
Internally there's a noticeable drop between Foreman and Warren. I mean, it's noticeably externally as well, but Warren needs to run more assertively. He started off tentatively last year and then came on but he needs to get downhill ASAP.

We continue to hear Heard is the best WR on the team. We sort of scoffed when we first heard this but it's looking pretty accurate.

I talked with former Florida WR, Jacquez Green, and he said Longhorns fans need to be patient with John Burt's hands. I noted Burt is a first rounder if his hands come around. "He can catch, he's just putting too much pressure on himself. His hands are fine." Burt has a little Will Fuller to him; special talent, just keep feeding him.

It took very odd circumstances for this to work, but the quarterback situation couldn't be better or more clearly defined. "This is Shane's team, but Swoopes has the full respect and confidence of his teammates, including Shane. The players love the dual identities they bring." That's an interesting comment. Players like to score with the big play, but they also like to bludgeon people. This team can get you with 1000 paper cuts or guillotine.

DEFENSE
The same source who told me the DL would be fine in August reminded me this weekend of that. He thinks it's the best position grouping on the team, top to bottom. The freshman are physically ready and the veterans have taken the next step. "Boyette did some things versus Notre Dame I never thought I'd see. I was wondering who the hell is this guy? D-line is one pass rusher from being special."

McCulloch pleasantly surprised people by not playing timidly. He's been a step slow in practice due to overthinking, but coming off the edge we were able to see the quickness that made him a force in high school. The adjustment hasn't been as quick for Shark as he thought, but Saturday was positive and he looked like he enjoyed football again.

Nobody can articulate what Davante Davis' issues were versus Notre Dame. It was a total head scratcher from a guy who made more costly mental mistakes in one game than he did as a freshman. Because of his drive and demeanor he's very popular with his teammates so they definitely have his back. UTEP was a return to normalcy for him.

Overall, the team is confident and the staff is worried about them becoming overconfident. The more this team experiences success, the harder the coaching staff will ride them.

Things are optimistic in Moncreif. Staff feels a year ahead of schedule.

Various Cal fans' posts in the past two days:

Sonny has never defeated a team while as an underdog and I don’t see that trend ending in this game. The game may be close but I don’t see us beating Texas at home.
---
Texas might rush for over 400 yards on us. They will easily have two one hundred yard rushers in Warren and Freeman [sic]. If they run the Swoopes package often enough then I have no doubts that Swoopes could surpass 100 yards as well.
---
I fear Texas... how do we stop a running QB after this game?
---
I wouldn’t be surprised if we are in last place in most PAC 12 defensive categories by tomorrow and if we aren’t we will be once we play Texas.
---
I am afraid we will not be able to keep up with Texas. I don’t see anything from our first two games to inspire us.

At Charlie's presser today he said that all the starters will be on the field at Cal. He then named them but I didn't hear him say Shack. Either an oversight or I need new batteries.

EDIT: The depth chart below shows Shack as the starter. YEA!

The line opened at Texas -4 but moved quickly to -7.5

Cal's offense is good but not yet great. Webb has shown some issues with decision making and pocket poise and presence and our OL (viewed nationally as a top group) has played well but not fantastic.

Good news for the offense is starting LT (and future NFL player) Aaron Cochran will be 100% for Texas after missing Hawaii game and playing sparingly against SDSU. He's a very good run blocker.

Our WRs are fast and dynamic. Our RBs will get yards if you only play 6 in the box. We ran far less against SDSU than was the plan because they had got an early lead they did not give up. When we did run, we were effective.

We lost on Saturday to a decent SDSU team because we gave up a ST TD and had four turnovers, all but one of which lead to scores.

Cal's defense against the run is bad as in really bad. Foreman and Warren should have very big days. That said, I think we hold up better vs. power runners than quick backs like SDSUs Pumphrey as we improved our gap coverage a lot in week two just failed to make tackles in space. Our secondary has been solid but has not seen anything close to the speed of Texas WRs. Our pass rush is just okay and that will IMO be the key to Saturday nights game.

First road game for Buechele suggests he will struggle (99% of true frosh QBs struggle in their first road game against a P5 team) and the fact that it's a night game and is Cal's home opener are all good news for Cal fans.

If Cal wins the TO battle and doesn't give up big STs plays (and those are big ifs) I think it's a real close game with a lot of scoring. IMO, Texas defense looks suspect. ND put up almost identical per play #'s versus Nevada at home as they did against you guys. I think Cal can and will score a lot if we can hold on to the ball.

If the Bears can get a lead and force Shane to throw, we have a chance. If Texas gets some TOs and can control the game on the ground with a handful of big time play action passes to Texas fleet WR corps, this could get ugly for our Bears.

Best of luck!

It's not a hostile environment and there will be a ton of Texas fans in the house of the Berkeley Bears.

As for ND production on offense, Kizer is a much better QB than the TT transfer. It's not even close.

Somewhat true, somewhat not. It will be 60k+ with Texas having 10k. It can and will get very loud if Cal plays well. Ask Tennessee when they visited awhile back.

I've been and will be in attendance. This kid isn't your average true freshmen QB, not like you ever see many. It won't phase him. They have a home in Cali as well, this is a vacation home game, lol.

I'm super impressed with Shane, think his future is super bright. That said, I'd be cautious at making him out to be fully baked at 18 years old and a true frosh. Road trips are tough regardless and Cal will be cranked up for this game. Expect to see exotic blitzes and coverages, a defense that tries to take away the deep fly patterns he throws so well and forces him to make contested out patterns or over the middle throws against a zone.

This game feels like if this Cal team is decent his year, we will play really well on Saturday. We may not be decent and this will be a simple notch in Texas' belt on their way to a B12 championship. If I'm a Texas fan, this game would make me really nervous. Road game, true frosh QB, facing a dynamic offense with a UT defense that is still unproven.

Ask ND about their Rex Ryan disciple of a DC about his exotic blitz packages. Tempo, the college hash, the spread formations, make it easy to see what the D is doing. Then there is the look back. You line up quickly and the coach in the box tells the coach on the field what the D is doing. The coach then calls the play. It takes a ton of thinking out of the QB position so all they have to do is run the play.

I'm really not nervous other than not liking the late kick, but, that's only for folks watching on TV. I'm taking each game as they come and go, but had this game been at DKR I can assure you, Texas would have been a -14 favorite to open. If he can get up for ND in-front of 103,000 people and never show an inkling of nerves, he can walk in and do his thing on the road. He has plenty of room to develop, but your squad wont be able to handle Swoopes and SB. Plus, they'll have our coveted LT and massive RG back for this game to go along with big boy TE and our number 1 RB that didn't play this past weekend. They've (Cal) given up nearly 600 yards on the ground to nobody's! I envision them doing much of the same... and the go routes from Texas are simply to keep any defense honest, he can hit the slants, etc., has and will continue to do so. This kid is humble, I'm talking extremely humble and a gamer beyond his years. Texas will kill Cal with tempo and then slow the game down whenever they need to. If they can do that to ND, they can do it to Cal.

I think Cal scores points, but I don't think your going to like our defense. Your QB doesn't scare me and hes prone to make poor decisions.

SDSU was the favorite to win and they did so.

48-24 is my prediction

I expect (hope?) to see:
  • Interceptions by our D! This is the game where Texas finally starts taking the ball away. They must do this to be a true contender. Protect the rock. Take the rock. The secondary will be tested severely, however, by what may be the #1 passer-receiver combo in CFB.
  • Both Smash Brothers will look, well, smashing! Swoopes will also be bruising and effective on the ground, and Buechele will be tempted to pull it down and run. Strong will constantly counsel #7 to do otherwise.
  • Fewer penalties. There's a balance in there. You don't want drive-crushing and drive-extending penalties. Nor do you want to cause life-altering injuries like TBIs. But some penalties are expected from young men having fun. The trick is finding the balance, while winning, of course.
  • Continued development of the offense, and of freshman receivers in particular.
  • Kent Perkins to stay in the game longer.
  • A solid win that doesn't show OU or OkSU too much.
