For the fourth time in five games, Oklahoma State will be at home, this time to face the Texas Longhorns. Having dispatched SE Louisiana in their season opener, 61-7, the Cowboys lost in Stillwater 30-27 to Central Michigan. Their third home game produced a narrow 45-38 victory over Pitt. On Saturday the team traveled to Waco and suffered a tough loss to Bailor while being held to a season low 24 points in the five hour contest. Three fumbles and an interception helped seal their fate.

The Cowboys' turnover troubles (8 fumbles/3 interceptions) are good news for the Longhorns defense that only has the loneliest number after three games.

With an extra week of practice, hopefully Gilbert has added a slant or middle-anything to the game plan.

What to expect:
  • One trick play
  • Two defensive turnovers
  • Three defensive sacks
  • Four rushing touchdowns
  • Texas wins 45-26
Weather forecasts show a high of 78° with plenty of sunshine for Saturday's 11AM kickoff.

HOOK 'EM!

Cowboys Defense vs. Longhorns Offense

We owe them guys from last year. OSU was the worst 10/3 team in the history of college fb last year. I can see OSU finishing with a losing record this year. I see about the same final score as you do I'll say

TX 38
OSU 21

If the Texas defense holds OSU to 21 I think we ALL would be excited. I hope you are right........I am going 49-38 Texas.

One year ago today, I'm still disgusted with that game.

My prediction based on our inept coverage in the secondary is 48-45 Texas squeaks one out.

You know what hasn't been talked about is that the receiver from Cal was leading the country in receptions going into our game. Then he has that phenomenal game against us. And I believe he had another one last Saturday against AZS even though they lost.

But OSU doesn't have anybody like that. James Washington is good and so is Jojuan Seales but I don't think they're as good as the Hansen kid. And the school that gave us Thurman Thomas and Barry Sanders has no running game to speak of. The only player of note they had last year was Emmanuel Ogbah and he's in the NFL now.

Hansen's #s are inflated because he's the best receiver in an offense that throws the ball 60 times a game. He is far from elite.

We aren't holding them to 21. I say L something in the 40s to something a little less in the 40s.

Stop trying to be cute with the 18 wheeler package. That's an inside the 15 or 4th quarter package only. No need going out there in the 3rd series with it. Hold your breath on defense. Hopefully they keep the OSU offense off balance because as bad as we are at pass coverage we can be gashed with the run as well. A balanced OSU attack will be a nightmare.

I'll post this here. I keep reading that the big 12 is down this year, but do the facts really back that up?

Baylor is undefeated(usual soft schedule)
Ok state should of been undefeated headed in to the Baylor game
OU has two losses to what could be half the CFP this year.
TCU lost a squeaker to a pretty solid Arkansas team.
West Virginia has looked solid against Mizzou and BYU

Maybe it's just me but seems to me the recored may not be as good in years past but i think it's as tough as it's been recently

I don't think they were getting cute with the 18 wheeler package. I think it was the game plan because Cal couldn't stop the run. However dumb penalties on the OL forced us in to long down and distance which kinda screwed up the plan. It was a solid plan. The execution was poor.

Inn the rest of the games this year. You'll see it just on the goal line.

Agree. Lose the ok. St. Game and the rhetoric will be magnified 10x due to 2 losses in a row. Beating OU is no job guarantee, ask Mack.
Say what you want about Strong he appears to know how to prepare for the OU game. Had no buisness being on the field with OU the last two years. Won last year and came close the year before. The talent level appears to be closer. Who knows how OU comes out to. I could see their season coming completely off the rails. Could also see them running off 9 stright

The plan is going to be to have Roach and Hager in the game more, and utilize Malik in the blitz game. Not sure what the plan was before, but if you are getting scorched anyway, why not bring some heat?

Strong says that Kent Perkins will be suspended this week, get counseling and do community service. Seems pretty appropriate

OU has no receiver firepower. Literally cannot get separation for the most part so far.
EDIT:Oops meant to quote Ryan_Sublett's post about OU here

Whoever loses the OK/TCU game will be in for a long, disappointing season. And there's no guarantee that the winner will go on to have a good season.

Let’s start things off with some team notes coming off the bye week:

A source tells us just about everyone is healed up and feeling better as they enter game week. The bye was a much-needed opportunity for the banged up guys to get some rest and recover from nagging injuries.

We talked to more folks regarding possible defensive changes, and the alterations mainly appear to be on the personnel front. The usual names like Malcolm Roach, Breckyn Hager, and Brandon Jones got more run with the first team this week.

The most important thing we heard and continue to hear is that the mood of the team and coaches is upbeat. The Longhorns know they can erase the bad taste of the Cal loss with strong performances against Oklahoma State and Oklahoma. The team knows that they have a shot to win the conference this season, and a sense of urgency is there with questions about the coaching staff.

Finally, we’ve heard the offensive staff used the bye week to do some more install. They were also able to get extended looks at some players currently in backup roles.

Our defense really worries me, and that's why I think this is such a big, big game.

I know a win is a win and all that, but if we win a 55-53 game and give up 500+ yards, I don't know how good i'll feel about a win like that.

I said when we hired Giblet and committed to the HUNH offense that there were very few of those teams that were able to play defense. So far we fit that description . Hell we can't even line up right without Dylan Haines.

I know it's early and Charlie says he will fix the defense. I'm still on the train, but we need to start seeing some improvement pretty soon.

– Most are expecting to see a shakeup in the defensive backfield after the performance vs Cal. The two main names that people want to see play more are sophomore S DeShon Elliott and freshman S Brandon Jones. Both guys will play more, but I was actually told Jones is receiving more 1st team reps at his position over Elliott. Mostly because Jones can also play nickel.

– I was told that during this bye week the staff basically went back to a fall camp mentality, “It’s like going back to basics…every spot is open”. I’m told even guys on scout team are getting reps and being looked at.

The staff seems to be trying to tell the starters, if you don’t play well you’ll be replaced and at the same time let the younger guys know that if they’re good enough, they’ll play. In my estimation a very smart move by Strong and the staff.

– I spoke to a source close to the program about whether the results we’ve seen defensively is a surprise. Source said, “Defense has been a problem but it’s just now mattering because they lost. Everything they (the secondary) got beat on in Cal are the things they get beat on in practice…they struggle with basic stuff.”

I know there are a lot of folks pointing the finger at Vance Bedford but I suspect Clay Jennings is feeling more than a little heat right now inside the program.

So is the sec west.

So is the PAC 12 south.

This is the great cycle of college football-- ebb and flow.

They played loose (the BU D), but they gave up a ton on the ground.

Most Underrated College QB

header-shield.png

Louisville's Lamar Jackson has clearly been the most dominant quarterback through the first three weeks of the college football season. I think we can all agree on that one. Who's the most underrated signal-caller in the country? The answer to that question is less obvious. I reached out to five NFL personnel executives to get their opinion on the subject. Here are their answers.

Executive 1: Shane Buechele, Texas
"I know he's just a freshman but the Texas QB is legit. I love his poise, deep-ball touch and overall feel for the game. He carries himself the right way, too."

Executive 2: Davis Webb, Cal....

Executive 3: Patrick Mahomes II, Texas Tech....

Executive 4: Tyler Stewart, Nevada....

Executive 5: Luke Falk, Washington State....

Summary: That's one vote apiece for Buechele, Falk, Mahomes, Stewart and Webb.

Conclusion: I haven't done a lot of tape work on these quarterbacks but I can vouch for Buechele's talent. I watched him live against Notre Dame in Week 1 and I was impressed with his arm talent and poise. He has a bright future....

Las Vegas has us at a 3.5 point underdog and the over under is 71. So they are looking at a 38-34 game.

Texas holds a 24-6 all-time series advantage over Oklahoma State, including an 8-1 mark over the Cowboys in Stillwater. OSU has won four of the last six series meetings, but the 'Horns have won each of the last eight matchups played in Stillwater.

Offensive Needs

Tight End/Receiver Blocking… This has to improve. Time and time again, the tight ends and receivers fail to find, fit, and fight through their blocks, mainly on the outside (all of them) and some on the inside (mainly Beck, no shade). Nothing is free in football, in order for this offense to reach a dominant level, the receiving unit must deliver on blocks to help create explosive plays out of the multiple screen and run concepts.

Strict Adherence… I have no problem with the system. What I do have a problem with is allowing a defense to dictate to the offense in any weight, shape, or form. For example, against Cal, it was my opinion that Texas needed to base nearly the entire game plan on running the football. For example, the system allows for quick passes to the flat when cushions are given to the receivers, which made me wonder, why weren’t there more perimeter runs? I’ve seen Gilbert-Mattox scheme various perimeter runs at prior stops, why not against an opponent that simply could not match the size and force of the Texas run game? That will need to change and I hope we begin seeing more perimeter runs, think sweep and what I’d hoped for against Cal, G-Lead. Get the ‘bigs’ outside and leading against small linebackers and safeties.

Holding Back… This one’s not a big deal, as the Texas offense hasn’t needed to show a lot. It’s main strength is the run game and as such, I think the focus remains there. As I mention above, if that’s to be the case, I’d love to see a couple more run game wrinkles. For example, it’s my opinion that Gilbert-Mattox should scheme more jet-motion into the game plan, simultaneously attack both the perimeter and the middle of the front more often. Also, Gilbert hasn’t tagged many running back swing passes at this point. Again, defenses are yielding space to the flat, in order to stay over the top of the Longhorns speedy receivers. This can be punished and you get the fun of watching defensive backs come up and stop FOREWARRENED. Say it with me, BIG PEOPLE BEAT UP LITTLE PEOPLE. Lastly, attack the middle of the field. Expect to see a core concept emerge for accomplishing just that. I suspect it’ll be a Dig-Drag concept, one they ran multiple times during the spring game.

Overall… I think the offense has been executed well, but the goal remains eventual dominance. If they continue to improve in all facets, that will come.

[TFB]

Lastly, attack the middle of the field.
Amen!
