Offensive Needs
Tight End/Receiver Blocking… This has to improve. Time and time again, the tight ends and receivers fail to find, fit, and fight through their blocks, mainly on the outside (all of them) and some on the inside (mainly Beck, no shade). Nothing is free in football, in order for this offense to reach a dominant level, the receiving unit must deliver on blocks to help create explosive plays out of the multiple screen and run concepts.
Strict Adherence… I have no problem with the system. What I do have a problem with is allowing a defense to dictate to the offense in any weight, shape, or form. For example, against Cal, it was my opinion that Texas needed to base nearly the entire game plan on running the football. For example, the system allows for quick passes to the flat when cushions are given to the receivers, which made me wonder, why weren’t there more perimeter runs? I’ve seen Gilbert-Mattox scheme various perimeter runs at prior stops, why not against an opponent that simply could not match the size and force of the Texas run game? That will need to change and I hope we begin seeing more perimeter runs, think sweep and what I’d hoped for against Cal, G-Lead. Get the ‘bigs’ outside and leading against small linebackers and safeties.
Holding Back… This one’s not a big deal, as the Texas offense hasn’t needed to show a lot. It’s main strength is the run game and as such, I think the focus remains there. As I mention above, if that’s to be the case, I’d love to see a couple more run game wrinkles. For example, it’s my opinion that Gilbert-Mattox should scheme more jet-motion into the game plan, simultaneously attack both the perimeter and the middle of the front more often. Also, Gilbert hasn’t tagged many running back swing passes at this point. Again, defenses are yielding space to the flat, in order to stay over the top of the Longhorns speedy receivers. This can be punished and you get the fun of watching defensive backs come up and stop FOREWARRENED. Say it with me, BIG PEOPLE BEAT UP LITTLE PEOPLE. Lastly, attack the middle of the field. Expect to see a core concept emerge for accomplishing just that. I suspect it’ll be a Dig-Drag concept, one they ran multiple times during the spring game.
Overall… I think the offense has been executed well, but the goal remains eventual dominance. If they continue to improve in all facets, that will come.

Lastly, attack the middle of the field.
Amen!
