Game Week 4 – Okie State

I fear that we're going to lose this game to Okie St. and it'll be ugly. The loss will be squarely on Vance Bedford and the defense.

Hope I'm wrong . . . but I don't think I am. Our defense against Cal was historically bad. That debacle wasn't just a "1 off" that can be fixed in 2 weeks IMHO. San Diego St held them to 23 and ASU intercepted Webb multiple times. ASU is not a great or even good team . . . picked to finish in the bottom half of the Pac. And San Diego St??? Not one of their players would start for Texas.

I'm struggling to stay on the Charlie bandwagon. He needs to show me something on Saturday or I may "hop off" and start walking . . . towards Houston and Tom Herman.

51 - 31 Okie St. :(
I respectfully disagree. Tech has a problem on defense they can't fix. Cal has a problem on defense they can't fix. In a bye week you can't make your players bigger or faster. We don't have that problem. Our problem is mental. Whether its players not communicating or coaches putting them in bad positions, that problem can be fixed. I'm not saying it will be fixed, I'm saying it can be.

My head is going to explode Saturday afternoon no matter.
If we bring out a defense that stops (-21) OkState I'll be happy and then wonder where the F&CK was this against ND and Cal.
If we don't stop their offense then I'm going to freak out and get drunk! Probably say bye to Charlie as well.

You can't worry about the past. If something seems to work, just move forward and hope they keep building. That's all you can do unless you want to drive yourself crazy.

Agree with this though
If we don't stop their offense then I'm going to freak out and get drunk!

I don't care what offenses we face. This is a Charlie Strong coached team. Every offense should be posting season low stats against Texas because Charlie Strong is a defensive coach. He doesn't know shit about offense, but he knows defense.

Frank Beamer was a crappy offensive coach, he teams rarely had a great offense. But you knew going in that you would be facing one of the best defenses in the country.

Why are we sitting here in year 3 of the Charlie Strong era with a defense ranked in the 100's? That above all else is unacceptable.

This is not a vote to fire Charlie, but he needs a wake up call, if you suck at what you do well, you are not going to be a head coach very long.

The DC at Texas should not matter, he should be nothing more than a figure head as this should be Charlie Strong's defense all the time.

I don't know if someone told him early on to be like Mack, but it isn't working and he needs to fix things or we will be seeing the start of the Tom Herman era.

Vegas has us at 3 point dogs. If we lose by 3 tds then this is over.

It worried me during preseason practices to see GDDH and the corners still barking at each other and busting coverages. I'm just at a loss for words how with the athletes we have we just can't line up in straight man and get the job done. I know, I know, a good OC will take advantage of that-- but the level of frustration I feel about our defense is borderline criminal.

It's been 12 days since we last played but it's felt like 12 years. Is Saturday ever going to get here?

This. Everyone keeps saying why we can't do this or we can't do that. Sure, if you have a top 25 defense and people are complaining about sacks, you don't just up and turn Malik into a pass rusher or add 50 plays a game for Roach. If you are giving up a long play or two a game you don't get Jones 50 snaps a game. If you total yards look bad but you are holding teams below their average point totals because you are are getting turnovers, maybe you don't change your scheme. None of that is happening. Our d gives up way too many big plays, isn't getting pressure, and isn't getting turnovers. Basically we don't achieve any single goal, and don't make it up by playing well over all. And this is with a unit stacked with athletes.

Everybody needs to back away from the ledge.... two weeks since our last game is getting to your heads.

Damn I hope you're right. I've just got this feeling in the pit of my stomach and it's not good.

I don't expect the coaches to give the game plan away, but I think some imagine that the coaches are being a lot more secretive than they really are. There seems to have been a general break tapping on the changes that were discussed immediately after Cal.
Maybe that's not a bad thing. Maybe the coaches have identified minor tweaks that can make this thing run better.

Coaches never say anything beyond generic remarks as far as strategy is concerned. Fans just don't give a crap about it when they are winning, but get pissed when they are losing.

in this case Strong was pretty heavy handed with his remarks after the cal game.

I’m not going to go into details about last year’s Oklahoma State game, like the ghost fumble recovery, defensive holding, Coach Strong penalty, and the botched punt snap. What I will say is, this match-up will make two games in a row where bitterness may exist among staff, players, and fans alike. Especially now, after the Cal revenge game didn’t go the Longhorns’ way, this game presents another opportunity for the team to unleash an unholy hell on the Pokes and relieve themselves of many frustrations. It also commences the season’s ‘Oklahoma Campaign’ and the team’s first operation, we’ll call it ‘Operation Killwater’.

Disclaimer, I am not, in any weight shape or form, condoning violence, only a painful and miserable home defeat for the Cowboys, who will try to herd and corral the Longhorns stampede. This should make for a good contest.

I see this as a somewhat even contest with one kicker. If the Texas defense takes a step in the right direction, I think the Longhorns leave Stillwater with a win.

I just thought I’d mention it, but the refs better not suck, AGAIN!

Overall… I think this is a good match-up. If Texas closes the defensive gap (entirely possible), I think they control the action and win. As with any game, it’s about the players and execution. I’m willing to bet Charlie, Vance, and the players make things right on defense. I’m not looking for anything special, just a disciplined, energetic, and physical unit.

On the offensive side of the ball, it’s business as usual, but I do hope to see a couple interesting additions to the call sheet. This game can’t come soon enough for a group of players seeking redemption.

I understand your point but whether they made big changes or they didn't, they are not going to reveal it to reporters before the game. That would be dumb.

Right because clearly the coaches are going to tell the media everything they changed or plan on changing
I agree. Only a moron or traitor would outline in an interview or on a website how they propose to defeat the enemy. Coaches realize this and are pretty tight lipped.

Ok...I have had my final discussion with myself and I have agreed with me that this game....this game will be the end all, tell all game. Period. If we step up and play defense...if we continue to grow our offense...If we look like a damned TEXAS team ought to look like and we simply bet the hell out of OSU, then we have really found our guy.

If we again flounder around and look lost on defense and special team kick coverage then I will be ready to throw the towel in on Strong as much as I want him to succeed.

If we are looking very good on both sides of the ball, but have buzzard luck with officials, turnovers and other weird stuff that seem to follow us around, I will decide we are cursed and wont know what to think.

FWIW - Norm Hitzges on KTCK Ticket in Dallas just made the Horns a double play. But then again, he was 2-8 against the spread last week.

My prediction is 41-20 Horns

Some others:
UPI - 31-27 Pokes

BON:
Eberts - 45-42 Texas
Daniel - 38/27 Texas
Keyes - 30-21 Texas
Orlansky - 37-21 Texas
Crochet - 38-34 Texas

Athlon - 31-27 Texas

247:
Burton - 38-30 Pokes
Howe - 34-31 Texas
Holland - 33-31 Pokes
Callahan - 38-35 Texas

Sport Day - 34-31 Texas

CFB News - 37-34 Texas

Campus Insiders - 40-35 Texas

I get it, but there has got to be a middle ground somewhere. The D can't just be dogshit until Malik's class are SRs. Especially when our also young offense is performing quite well.
I think we will see that middle ground this season even though the starters are getting younger, not older.

Malik is gone after next season as they begin to peak.

It matters my dude!

2014 Starting Defense:

Strong End - Ced Reed - Senior
DT - Malcolm Brown - Junior - 1st round draft pick
DT Nose - Tank Jackson - Senior -got hurt, Green Mile
Fox End - Shiro Davis - Junior
Strongside LB - Peter Jenkins - Junior
Middle LB - Steve Edmond - Senior
Weakside LB - Jordan Hicks - Senior drafted
CB - Q Diggs - Senior - drafted
Safety - Mykkele Thompson - Senior - drafted
Safety - Jason Hall - TRUE FRESHMAN
CB - Duke Thomas - Junior
Nickle - Diggs/Thompson - Seniors

That's right, there's not a bunch of Sophomores, Red Shirt Freshmen and Freshmen in that list of starters. The transition from HS to D1 CFB is not simple.

Has the 2 deep been released for Saturday? There is likely 6 starting sophomores on defense and that number might be 8 come Saturday. With youth comes mistakes, but they will get better.

thanks Spur....solid post. Let me be clear. I expect Texas to win tomorrow and not by just a little. I think the defense will show much better than it did against Cal.What I will not abide by is seeing our defense stumble around like it was the first day of practice. I want to see some evidence of good coaching.

I am glad to see that there is MUCH evidence that Bedford is a good coach. He has developed many players that were 2 and 3 star guys and had them drafted.

For reference, I think the average number of underclassmen starters on defense within Power 5 programs is 1.75...

Interesting comments. I was lambasted for suggesting you defense just wasn't very good last year and told that it was because the offense left the Defense on the field all game but now that the defense isn't on the field near as much, your defense still isn't good? Was I wrong? In 2014, Bedford was enjoying Mack's recruiting prowess.

Our defense was shit last year Bell, I doubt anyone argued against that. They were on the field too much due to inept offense, but suck...they did.

You can't argue against 107th ranked defense.

Yeah but it's not that black and white. Our underclassmen are supposed to be better than a lot of programs upperclassmen.
Ummm, no. Players, even low ranked players develop physically and mental over time.

Transition from HS to CFB is not simple. That is black and white.

So our two true sophmore OL along with a true freshman center, and a true freshman QB playing well is just a gift from god and not a sign that they are better than the typical recruit or that Gilbert and Mattox are good offensive coaches? Regardless of how highly a recruit is sought after we should expect results until they are upper classmen?
