I met a couple while on vacation last week that were big Ohio State fans ... their family actually had historic ties to the athletic department going back several decades. Very nice people.
My thinking is that Ohio State is a lot like a school like Alabama. Not a ton going on in Columbus and their football program pretty much runs the state. As such, lots of excuses being made and everyone is basically willing to turn a blind eye if the program is winning. Never mind that Zach Smith is a piece of trash, I heard things about how the wife was an alcoholic, had been pulled over for drinking and driving several times, that the only reason Smith was arrested for trespassing was because he went to her house to pick up the kids after she failed to meet him at a designated public spot, that the Columbus police were going to testify on Zach Smith's behalf, etc.
All that may be true, but it doesn't excuse the fact that Smith was/is an abusive POS, that Meyer knew about it and that Meyer basically ignored everything, partly because Smith is the grandson of Meyer's mentor, Earle Bruce.
Pretty sad situation that football can cloud and brainwash so many peoples' opinions. If Smith was abusive and if Meyer knew about the things that was going on, Meyer needs to be gone, regardless of what flaws Courtney Smith had (and it sounds like she does have issues of her own). Just like with that stupid ass report by Ohio State homer Jeff Snook, people up there are focusing on the wrong issues and it has the feel to me that OSU is going to do whatever it can to deflect just enough blame to save Meyer's job.
Personally, I'll be shocked if Meyer gets fired. That fan base, city and the OSU community doesn't care about doing what's right and they're going to do whatever they can to throw mud at Courtney Smith to deflect blame from Meyer. Sad what the high of having a winning football team will do to some communities.
Rant over.
