Recently signed Texas kicker Trent Domingue addressed the media on Tuesday. Domingue joined the Longhorns two weeks ago and is expected to replace Nick Rose this season (minus the trick videos). .
Here are some of the highlights from his media availability:
- Domingue joined the Longhorns as a grad transfer after LSU did not renew his scholarship. After considering several schools, he decided to play for UT and enter the advertising program. He does not have any resentment about what occurred at LSU this summer: “Things at LSU went a different way than I expected, but that’s just life. You just got to move on. I’m definitely glad I made this decision because it’s an awesome. I couldn’t’ really be in a better spot right now.”
- Texas fans can thank defensive line coach Brick Haley for guiding Domingue to Texas. Haley was previously an assistant at LSU and was familiar with Domingue. After the kicker was granted his release, he reached out to Haley.
- In addition, Texas should thank Domingue’s fiancé, Emily Chastain. She actually sent Domingue a link to an article expressing Charlie Strong’s desire to add a kicker. That eventually led to Domingue’s interest in Texas. Chastain is currently pursuing a doctorate degree at South Alabama.
- Domingue was an afterthought at LSU, but expected to start at Texas. He said, “You can kind of see in the coaches how they support me. I don’t expect to come here and be the starting kicker. I want to compete and make sure that I’ve earned the job. I didn’t come here thinking I was the starter. I want to compete with the other guys that were here in the spring, and here two or three years before me.”
- Domingue said he visited Austin one time prior to arriving on campus. A former teammate at LSU had a home on Lake Travis, and Domingue stayed there during spring break. His previous experience in Austin is one reason why he wanted to relocate to this city.
- Of course, Domingue was asked about his infamous trick play and said, “That was awesome. There are not many coaches in the nation, or the world, that would have called a play like that, in a game like that, in that time of the game. I’ve thanked him many times. I love coach (Les) Miles. He’s awesome. That’s why they call him the mad hatter. That was amazing. I just got to thank him for giving me that opportunity.”
- Domingue is comfortable with 52-yard field goals, but does not believe his range is 60 yards. He lost his kickoff duties last season, but Domingue is optimistic he will resume that role at UT.
