Hiking in New Mexico - Taos Area

Considering a September hiking trip in the Taos area. Thinking we will stay in Taos and then take day hikes from there.

Looking for light to moderate hikes. Are there some good options for hiking in that area?

Question - for those familiar with hiking in New Mexico, is Taos a good place to base out of or are there other areas in New Mexico that would be more accessible to day hikes?
