Currently in Texas, HPD and Fort Worth PD have purchased and use Stingray cell site simulators and Austin PD is trying to get hold of the technology. Texas DPS also has the technology in use. Perhaps this is a topic on which we can all agree... this is not a good situation. When using a Stingray, it doesn't target one phone, it will collect all cell and text data for every phone within 1/2 mile of where it is being operated... and, it is mobile so Police can drive around and collect huge amounts of data on people. What's next? Employers using these devices on work premises? Schools? Divorce lawyers? Sure, there are times when it seems desirable and might stop something bad from happening, but there are unintended consequences a-plenty. I used to work in cybersecurity and there is already a bunch of shady shit going on that the public doesn't know about (by corporations and government)... classic slippery slope. Thoughts?
