This will be the first year since 2003 I will not be at the game. My first game was 1983 (go Edwin). I was born and raised in Dallas, and this game has always meant something deeply special to me. I remember our middle school football team practicing the day before the 1984 game, and the Goodyear Blimp was flying over north Dallas right by where we were practicing. Everyone knew why it was there - for the big game the next day - but we imagined it was there for us. I wonder if the blimp actually even got off the ground on game day in 1984 in the monsoon.

I moved away from Dallas in 1989, and the second week of October always calls to me even in years I’m not able to be there. The 2003 game was an atrocity and the last one I missed, but something felt very wrong to me that year that I was not in the Cotton Bowl. It’s essentially a homecoming for me each year.

May this great tradition continue in the following years under more normal circumstances!
