Not all heartbreaking losses are bad losses.

In this new age of the expanded playoff there are very few feel good post season wins for all but one team. Either you missed the playoffs or 11/12 teams are pissed off and heartbroken.

Texas was always limited by Quinn’s play this year. He’s not solely responsible for our performance at all but he was deeply enmeshed with both our ceiling and our floor. He had more than enough experience and talent to win that game, and enough volatility to lose it the way he did. I’m not saying this to be critical of Quinn because I deeply appreciate his Texas career, but in the end for his college campaigns he just didn’t have the makeup of a champion. In those biggest moments he didn’t have that “let me show you I’m not gonna do anything but win” that your championship QBs just have. I hope an NFL coach can bring that out in him and I wanted it to happen here but there was just one final fear he was not able to access in the multiple shots he got to access it.

Sark is an outstanding coach who is getting better as he evolves and the Texas 2024 campaign was a great—though will always feel incomplete— campaign.

I loved our defense and it was maybe the finest defense I’ve ever seen Texas field and I’m sorry that squad could not play in a championship game because they absolutely had that champion heart. They had the stuff. But in a 12 team playoff you have to be complete on both sides for multiple tough games all in a row.

2024 was a great year for Texas football. I will look back at this team and compare them a lot over the years as an index of good things.

And, of course, a few things that I hope we can eclipse and learn from in the future.
