Look only to the vaccine issues, flat earthers, Russian collusion, moon landing deniers, etc..
People are not rational, never have been. It is a skill some people have but it is not more powerful than emotion and belief even in those with the skill of rationality (I call it a skill because some people seem to lack it entirely). This is a lesson for economists and political theorists.
