Here are a few immediate thoughts and reactions to Tom Herman's K-State week press conference coming off a much-needed second bye week, and following a disastrous loss to a mediocre-at-best TCU team in Fort Worth:

Some positive injury news to start:

Jeffrey McCulloch - "gonna try like heck to get him back into practice ..." Herman went on to say they were shooting to try and get him into practice by Tuesday or Wednesday, but apparently the shoulder has been problematic. BJ Foster - "Probable." Demarvion Overshown - "About like (McCulloch, but he's cleared to practice ... still a little bit weak in that shoulder." Caden Sterns and Jordan Whittingon - Probable, both practiced on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday.

The team is excited "to fix some of the things that have ailed us in previous weeks."

- So, the team is excited about coaching better, blocking better, making better decisions at the QB position, catching better, tackling better, getting to the passer better and covering better.

Herman acted surprised by Ced Golden's question about the "tenor" of his conversations with assistants in the bye week and if he asked himself hard questions over the week:

- "I don't have time to ask myself hard questions, I ask myself hard questions every day."

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

"Going 1-0 against Kansas State."

- "You guys think this is an act ... or this is like fake, I don't know what to you guys think that have been around me for three years. I literally had to ask someone today in case I get asked that question 'who do we play after Kansas State." This was Herman's answer to Brian Davis' question about his outlook on the rest of the season and the fact that it could go any which-way from here. I think Herman likely knows who is left on the schedule, but I have no doubt he asked Bianco on the way up the elevator just to make sure he had it right. It's good to know the team should be focused as no opponent can be overlooked at this point given the last two games.

Ed Clements asked jokingly about if there are going to be trick plays this week as there haven't been many in recent weeks.

- Herman took the bit (Clements always asks about trick plays) and made it a little awkward by asking why he thinks there haven't been any recently. Clements said he didn't notice any versus TCU and Herman said that was right, then Clements said he didn't specifically remember any versus OU, either, but it was neither here nor there and he didn't want to quibble over it, etc. Herman said he'd have to go back and watch the film. Later in his answer, he said he was just giving him a hard time.

Chip Brown asked Herman to elaborate on Herman's statements prior to the bye that he would be "working on relationships" during the bye:

- The 2019 class each got a 10-play cut-up of plays from either in practice or in games that the Herman and their position coach went over with them. Herman said it felt great to just get back to coaching, and that the whole 2019 is in great sprits. "They've all assured me that they understand they have to fight through this and a lot of those guys that are playing need to be the same player we saw in weeks 1 and 2 and week 3."

Only 3 players on the Longhorns 'leadership council' live on-campus

- It's just the three sophomores, according to Herman. Herman said the group needs to be better with "bridging the gap" between the team's older leaders and the younger players on the team by trying to actively be around more often. It's an important detail to pay attention to that I certainly hadn't thought of.

Kirk Bohls asked if the team's confidence was shaken by the TCU game and the "close loss to Kansas."

- Ooooooooh buddy did Tom Herman correct him quickly about the second half of that question. =)roll

"We're on the ropes"

- "You can do one of two things. You can fight your way off the ropes or you can have your trainer throw in the towel."

"I haven't even thought about it."

- Herman was asked about why Daniel Young hasn't played recently and if the staff was holding him out in hopes of a redshirt. Herman said he hasn't thought about it and thanked Danny Davis of the AAS for asking so he could go and talk with Coach Drayton about what was going on there. Between us, I don't see much room for the guy considering Roschon Johnson's presence and the return of Jordan Whittington along with Ingram being healthy. Making an effort to squeeze in reps for a middling-level Division I runner like Young certainly doesn't seem like a positive-EV consideration at this time. If anything, it should have been considered in previous weeks.
