Here are a few immediate reactions to Tom Herman's post-UTEP presser:

- Glad that Herman gave a PC today, sometimes they don't have them coming into bye weeks. Had Texas crapped the bed like Kansas State or Iowa State, what do you think the chances are that he makes sure to get in front of the media today? I'll put them at 0.00%.

- Injuries:

Jordan Whittington - small tear in lateral meniscus, needs surgery - a "snip and clean out". 3-4 weeks, you really hate to see it. It's always something with Whittington and he was off to a very sick start.

Josh Thompson "too many stitches to count in his ear," he was practicing yesterday. Arguably the biggest standout of Week 1.

Dele Adeoye was cleared to play, but was held out for precautionary reasons. Maybe Texas won't start Cort Jacquess when conference play starts ... or maybe they will, he actually played well against UTEP.

Jake Smith is expected back for conference play.

- Anwar asked about BJ Foster quitting on the team mid-game: "He was very contrite, very apologetic. We'll handle the discipline in-house," Herman said. He's probably too good a player to just let walk away if he really is sorry, but I'm not sure the message it sends to allow guys to just quit then come back. It's a tough situation to handle and I'm glad I don't have to handle it, because I'm not sure if my principles lean more toward giving second chances or toward not allowing myself and those most important to me to be walked over and disrespected by others. Tough scene. Probably gotta lean toward giving college-aged guys second chances, some tough love, and hope they learn from their mistakes.

- Herman said the run game was "just OK," I haven't done the offensive review just yet, but from my own memories of the game, I sort of agree. Herman said the gameplan was more about getting the passing game on track, anyway.

- "The O-line was a bit rusty," -- It shouldn't be versus UTEP. Again, I'm still yet to do my film work on the offense; that starts after this column so I'll reserve judgement. It's why I do the Deep Dig so I can comment on these things without talking out my ass.

- "I don't know that we have the one or two dominant players (at the WR position) that we've had in the recent past," Herman said of his WR group. I stand by my stance that Jake Smith can be that type of player and my prediction is he will be by year's end. Do we really consider Collin Johnson circa 2019 "dominant"?? Come on, now.

- "Depth issues on the edge", Herman mentioned Leitao was moved to the DE from the JACK spot. Herman also mentioned Jacoby Jones was out. That was one of my big questions from the game is why that guy never got in. Guess that answers it.

- "The crew I've been very impressed with is the interior (DL)." Yep. I'll have more on this in the defensive Deep Dig.

- Herman likes the format with the extra byes this year. I like it too, and I'll bet a bunch of OBs do as well. I feel like deer hunting camps will be more populated among Orange-blooded Longhorns on those three extra weekends Texas has off through the fall.

- On what Herman thought he learned from game one: "This was one game versus a Conference USA opponent that allowed us to get better ... but we all know that we're going to be in some serious dogfights throughout the remainder of the season. The thing I was most impressed with was the effort level." Herman said with everything going on in the world, etc. "it had all the makings of a slow start." Thank God it wasn't versus that putrid team, the message board would have looked like Chernobyl by midnight on Saturday.

- Herman was asked about the walk-ons who played in the game and about the walk-on program in general. He said that the program was "not in good shape" when he got here. Interesting, another thing that was left in shambles by Charlie Strong under the strong leadership of Steve Patterson. The general hope, though, I would have to think, is that you don't really have to tap into that resource too often when you are recruiting well. Pretty interesting to see fromer walk-on Cort Jacquess now having made two-straight starts over healthy, recruited-as-scholarship players under separate defensive coaching regimes. To end last season and to start this one.

- Herman said there will likely be a four-man rotation at corner. After Saturday night, the early returns on Josh Thompson indicate that you shouldn't be getting him off the field too often. Boy he looked good.

- Herman said that we're finally seeing the fruits of the recruiting and development his staff has done during its time at Texas. OL recruiting needs to pick ASAP if he doesn't want the train to slow down to some degree coming into 2021. I'm not sure that I completely agree with Herman saying that his staff has "developed players at an elite level," either. To my eyes, they've been fine, but "elite" makes you think of the Alabamas of the world.

- "It took Mack Brown 7 years to win his first conference championship here." Goalpost set? 😉

- Ced Golden asked about the team staying safe during the bye week: Tom Herman said he was "really confident." I hope he knocks on wood, but Herman's right to be proud of his guys. A season is tough enough as it is. It's tough enough to be a student-athlete at a place like Texas without living in your own virtual bubble. He's proud of them for maintaining a high level of security within the program. I am, too.
