Here are a few immediate thoughts and reactions to Tom Herman's October 19th press conference, as the Longhorns prepare to face Herman's college roommate Dave Aranda and the and his new Baylor Bears squad in Austin:

- INJURIES: Chris Brown (shoulder hurt flexing at opposing players) and Brendan Schooler (pretty significant thigh contusion - has had it drained -- ick) are both expected back tomorrow. Jake Smith (hammy) has been practicing already last week following the late-scratch versus OU. Reese Leitao, Tyler Owens and Caden Sterns all practiced Sunday. Brayden Liebrock (shoulder) is expected back at practice tomorrow. Jordan Whittington has a "very, very freak strain" of his hip flexor. Herman said it is not related to his previous issues, but rather to a hit he took in the game that messed with the insert into his vertebrae that will not require surgery, but will take a few weeks to allow to heal.

What brutal injury luck that dude has had, I hope he keeps his head up.

- Herman said his heart goes out to Dave Aranda, and he can't imagine what he's been going through. MY THOUGHTS: I understand showing concern for a fellow coach and friend, but Aranda's team has been dealing with a similar COVID outbreak to many other teams in the nation. Herman gave condolences as if Aranda had suffered a tragedy. Seemed a little over done, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

- Here we go -- Herman wants to address the Eyes right off

"I want to make it very clear that our coaches, not just in football but in every sport are completely aligned." They've been communicating all summer about what post-game should look like and have had meaningful conversations with the team about it while also being cognizant of the "feelings, to the very individual circumstances that all of these young men are going through."

Herman said at the most recent team meeting, in which CDC was in attendance, that CDC talked about the importance of paying tribute to the fans and it was a great meeting with the result being that the general pulse of the team is that they are in the best place that they've been to date.

Herman said he's proud the team has stayed unified through all of this, "and when I say unified it doesn't mean everyone agrees. There has been lots of open, honest, mature conversation in regards to a lot of topics."

MY THOUGHTS: No wonder this team can't win football games, they are too busy singing Kumbaya.

"We're a divided country," Herman said.

MY THOUGHTS: Dear Lord.

"Our locker room is the opposite. Everybody is listened to and there are no grudges held." Herman said he respects the hell out of his team for "fostering that environment of inclusivity."

MY THOUGHTS: This is answering nothing. It is platitudes and catch phrases and gobbledygook. If you want to say nothing about the Eyes, simply say nothing about the Eyes.

QUESTIONS (I furiously sip my Dasani)

- Roger Wallace opens with his usual softball about how hard things are given COVID. Herman said, "as fall turns to winter, unfortunately, I think you're going to see more and more of this." Herman said it has always been expected and isn't a surprise to anyone. Herman said he's had his GAs and assistants (likely shift their focus from OB) to Baylor message boards and forums to monitor rumors about Baylor COVID news. MY THOUGHTS: If you don't think everything written on this board gets back to Herman, you are crazy.

- Herman said he read today about "COVID fatigue" on Yahoo! News today (a website that he seems to name-drop with incredible frequency, oddly) Herman said we could see a considerable uptick in cases in the near-future because people are just so exhausted with having to live like this.

- Ed Clements asked if Herman is going to brief his team on how Aranda operates. Herman said that "Dave is doing it the right way" as a first-year head coach and staying out of game-planning. MY THOUGHTS: I'll never understand how Herman thinks a coach who was hired for his schemes shouldn't put those schemes into action at his head coaching job just so he can focus more on being a figure head. It might be how Herman ended up in the situation that he's in.

- Herman made sure to mention that he, himself, also feels like a new head coach, what, with having to replace 7 coaches and installing an all-new offense and defense in a COVID-shortened offseason, etc.

- Kirk Bohls asked if the whole team will stay on the field after the game, if that's his understanding. "I don't have an understanding, the only understanding I have is that we as coaches have encouraged them to appreciate and respect our fans and that has been echoed by CDC as late as last week." MY THOUGHTS: Man, non-answers and deflections are just in the air across everywhere you look these days. Mack Brown would probably say it scares ya to death. (I think fans would kill to have Mack and his then-ire-inducing platitudes like that back).

- Herman deployed the rarely-used 'pre-excuse' technique by saying he does not have any truly usable tape on this Baylor team. So, if there is a loss, be on the lookout for that as something he can point to as a key reason why post-game.

- John Hygh asked exactly what CDC told the guys and how does the Cotton Bowl thing even happen with Sam out there alone. Herman said there was a lot of confusion about what was going on, the band wasn't there, etc. He said that this being a home game, they know exactly where to go and what to do. He said the expectations this week are exactly what they were months ago. MY THOUGHTS: So, Herman is either saying 1) we will continue to see the team (or at least significant portions of it) bail for the Eyes or 2) he's lying. We've now had two home games where everyone left and/or someone tried to play the song at a weird time to keep things from getting awkward. If everyone magically stays this week, are you really going to tell the fanbase that it is because Herman has told them the same thing over the last two weeks as he has previously? I know Herman's a genius and all, but he must really not think much of the intellect of many fans if he thinks they buy that.

- Big News: The leadership council on the team has announced a few new measures in regard to accountability! There is an "accountability run" pre-practice each Tuesday.

- Herman said if we were at practices, we would see that the "effort level is phenomenal." MY THOUGHTS: Hey Coach, if you are reading this, let us go to practice, then. Let us write about it. Let us tell fans the stories in a way that isn't coming straight from the state-run media. Don't let Bianco tell you all the reasons why it is a bad idea; ask Mack Brown why it is critical for a coach in your shoes. If you want the news out about how the team is practicing, allow us to report on it (within certain non-negotiable boundaries/limitations so as not to create any competitive disadvantage). I understand it is different this year than most, but please think about it coming into next spring.

- BD asked what Herman likes about his team -- "Just the improvement," he cited the OU game (which Texas lost) and various 3rd down stats from it. "The offense's ability in two minute as well as the overall play of the QB. The improvement in a lot of areas of the defense ... we have to run the ball better, we have to find ways to run better, but there are a ton of bright spots in the last two games for us to build on."

- Anwar told Herman he feels like he's in a tough spot about the Eyes, on one hand, it seems like he could lose the locker room if he's seen as going against the spirit of marching with them to the capitol this summer, etc. if he forces them to stay on the field, but on the other, he risks alienating the fan base. Anwar asked if middle ground is impossible.

"I don't think anything is impossible," Herman answered. "Nobody from CDC to myself to any other coaches have mandated that our players do anything. We've educated them, we've encouraged them and we have shown them the benefits. "Mandated" is a strong word that has never been used ... it is a continual education, a continual showing and putting into real tangible examples of why recognizing our fans, independent of your feelings, of the song is important to do."

Anwar followed up and asked what "showing respect to fans" looks like, to which Herman reiterated that CDC's wish is that the players stand out there for the song, not necessarily FOR the song, per se, but to thank the fans. "If that's what our guys choose to do, we would be very proud of them, but we are also sensitive to those who feel a different way."

- Jim Vertuno astutely pointed out that CDC keeps using the word "expectation" while Herman keeps using the word "encouragement." That one sort of stumped Herman as he had to point back to last week's pre-PC statement he made. "This is not a mandate. We are working through some unprecedented times with some very open and transparent dialogue ... Whatever word you wanna use, I don't think guys get caught up in words, they pay attention to what the message is."

Chip asked what is wrong with the defense: "I think overall it's been minor assignment issues, not coverage busts, I'm talking about the small details that just take a thousand reps." MY THOUGHTS: Again, another nod to the fact that the team was robbed of reps due to COVID.

Mark another one off the Bingo Card, or just take a shot, I could use one myself at this point.
