Here are a few immediate thoughts and reactions to Tom Herman's pre-Week 3 press conference in advance of the Horns' first road trip of 2019 to face the mighty Rice Owls and following a disappointing home loss to one of the nation's top programs in LSU:

BJ Foster will be out at least a couple of weeks with a "pretty significant" hamstring issue per Herman.

When did it happen? I'll have to finish the film work on the defense, but as of the start of the game, he was playing at a much greater frequency of snaps than versus La Tech in the dime "joker" role. I don't remember him leaving the game early so that will be interesting to keep an eye on. Certainly a big loss, but given the depth of these types of "swiss-army knife" players that Texas has as safety-LB-ish tweeners such as Chris Brown and Demarvion Overshown, not a knockout blow - especially with an opponent like Rice coming up.

"When you complete passes (on us), it's not always on the secondary."

Herman said that sometimes it is the fault of the linebackers not dropping properly and gave credit to Joe Burrow as well. What he didn't mention is that it is also the scheme and the play calls that DC Todd Orlando utilized in the game. With Brandon Jones playing in a nickel-like position in this one, it left wide-open windows that Burrow could go to as hot reads on many times when Jones blitzed.

"None."

This was Tom Herman's answer to whether it was causing an issue that none of his starting defensive linemen had a sack yet. "Stats don't matter for defensive linemen," Herman said and went on to say that Malcolm Roach and Keondre Coburn both had very disruptive days versus LSU. Through the first part of my film evaluation (I have to break on Mondays to write this) I agree about Roach but not Coburn. Ta'Quon Graham certainly continues to look like the same player he has always been, which has been largely ineffective. Thankfully, in the Deep Dig scoring, we do count our own non-traditional disruption statistics which hopefully help give a clearer picture of the type of impact Herman is talking about which counting stats don't. However, for him to say he is not one bit worried about that group is clearly coachspeak. It has growing to do just like everyone else.

"It's not a fair assumption (to say the blown coverages) were the secondary's fault until you know what each coverage call was and who's responsibility it is."

So once we do know what each coverage was and who's responsibility it was, can we then blame the secondary, who, you know, blew the coverage? At some point, someone is to blame. I don't ever grade a player for allowing a completion or a burn, etc. unless we get a view from the broadcast angle that clearly shows the DBs and the route, etc. When a coach says this kind of thing, it is a defense mechanism to let the questioner know that he doesn't understand the game of football and that this line of questions falls out of their league for understanding because football is too complicated for anyone outside of the sport to wrap their heads around. It's a very common communication technique of coaches to dismiss these types of questions, so this is not me calling him dictatorial or unethical, etc. Herman did say that maybe the defensive staff needs to "dial back" some and - presumably - not get so aggressive bringing blitzes that leave areas of the field so badly exposed or young corners on difficult islands. This was a mentality that the staff could not get away from versus LSU -- and even Herman admitted after the game, saying the mantra all week was to "empty the barrel" versus LSU and leave everything out there. In short, Herman's defense of the players and dismissal of the idea that things were out of synch in coverage Saturday was an admission that coaching errors were likely just as much to blame for the mishaps.

Herman totally misunderstood Bohls' question about the LSU players cramping.

lmao. Funny exchange where both guys were confused by what the other was saying.

"Not great."

Herman's assessment of the corner play this week. I 100% agree and I'll bet you do, too. He said that the corners will continue to have competition among them about who will start. At this point, it's hard to tell who the best options are if we're being honest. They all had a lot of trouble versus the LSU WRs as they rotated in and out. They are young and will continue to grow, though. If that is the case, I'd side with the youth and upside of Cook and Green.

"Don't tell that to your subscribers - that what they're doing is easy."

lmaoooooooooo! Herman with a nod to the maniacs on Orangebloods! Anwar prefaced his question about some in-game decisions by saying that it's easy to be a Monday morning QB and that it's easy to say hindsight is 20/20.

Congrats guys. You've made the big time.
