On this Memorial Day, a look at big picture thoughts on our country in relation to the world is in order.
Why does US immigration policy currently present such a compelling argument? Digging deeper, what creates the demand for others to leave their own countries?
A free country seemingly should have free and open borders, according to some. Others maintain that secure borders is the only way to maintain sovereignty and safety of its citizens, along with policies to qualify those who would enter our country.
Apparently, the US free enterprise system offers the best solution comparatively for people wanting the optimal living standard, based on pure numbers. However, that economic system requires "give" as much as -- or even more so -- than "take." So effective and proven, it also has grown to be used now in countries that used to be Socialistic, even Communistic. And having a superior US Military is a key part of the system that makes possible the freedom that drives people here.
Young people -- those about 30 and under -- generally cannot relate to what Socialism (L) as compared to Democracy (R) even means. Generally, they look to Scandinavia as an answer which it factually is not. Queries to young Sanders supporters show this fact. When asked about dictatorial regimes where the military is installed against its own citizens, they usually have no understanding from which to base an answer.
If they were to study the history of oppressive places like Russia, look at Western Europe's demise as a direct result of failed Liberal economic (bankrupt Euro?) and social policies, or even watch daily news reports out of Venezuela right now -- pure Socialism -- where people are eating out of trash bins and scrambling for the bare necessities of life amidst Marshall Law, they could possibly understand why those people long for a place very different than their current one. Ask anyone who immigrated here from Ukraine, Georgia, Latvia, or any other former Soviet countries, or Russia itself -- they know, too.
It is a wonder why our leaders do not question that we are becoming more like Europe all the time. The argument that social issues are more important than the fiscal would do well to examine Venezuela or Greece to find the answer that social issues follow the fiscal.
The Sanders followers also could understand the difference between Liberalism vs Conservatism as it relates to a successful way of life, taken to the extreme in examples of the countries mentioned above. Given this, it is no wonder that such a high demand exists to leave and that placed on the worldwide scale of L to R, the L represents failure with people fleeing in droves, seeking to move towards the other side of things.
