So, there’s a lot of folks saying we or the world didn’t show enough strength to prevent Putin from invading Ukraine.

We won’t put boots on the ground in Ukraine because of the whole threat of nuclear war. Our only options are sanctions and military aid (give them weapons to defend themselves) and financial aid.

We can’t really do the sanctions thing until Putin actually invades Ukraine or else Russia will say, “Hey, we didn’t even do anything, why are you sanctioning us?”

We can do the militant financial aid thing beforehand, and we have been.

After the invasion, why not just go balls out and do 100% max sanctions? Is it because we want to ratchet up the heat on Putin incrementally and continue to give him a chance to retreat? Keep some arrows in our quiver instead of immediately backing him into a corner and leaving him no options except the nuclear war thing?

Is the thinking that we can still have a next step to take and hope that puts enough pressure on the oligarchs that surround him and the Russian people to convince him to back down?

It’s kind of a 4D chess game, isn’t it?
