The Longhorns land their first commitment from the transfer portal of the 2024 off-season and this is a big one.

The 6’8 205lbs Indiana State transfer offers the Horns some versatility in their front court, specifically at the 4 spot. Last season, Kent averaged 13.5 ppg, 8.1 rebounds, had 20 blocks and shot 37% from 3. I think we can all agree that we love Dillon Mitchell but he didn't offer much outside of the paint offensively. Kent provides a fantastic floor spacing element while also being an excellent rebounder. In watching the tape, Kent moves EXTREMELY well off the ball and has a very high basketball IQ. He's a player that's fluid in the offense, and runs the floor extremely well.

That all being said, it's hard to not think about the level of competition that a lot of these transfers play against in their respective conferences prior to entering the portal. Max Abmas is an all too real example.

What the data shows is something different when it comes to Kent.

He played his best basketball of the season when the level of the competition was raised. He had a 4 game stretch at the end of the season where he had 22 points against Drake, 35 against SMU, 16 against Minnesota, and 16 against Cincinnati. Texas is getting a player with starter-level experience that can stretch the floor, has a high basketball IQ, is a good defender, and raises their level of play when it matters most.

Sign me up.

If Rodney Terry brings in guys like THIS, Texas will be in good shape while navigating the long and windy road of building a truly dynamic roster. Speaking of bringing in guys like Kent, is the Indiana State pipeline to Texas being opened? We'll see...
