Cliffs Notes: The Longhorns improved its depth and potential starting line-up in the secondary on Sunday with the commitment of San Jose transfer Jay'Vion Cole.

Resume: Cole emerged from obscurity in 2023 after transferring from Cal-Poly and evolving into one of the top defensive backs in the Mountain West Conference, as he earned honorable mention all-conference honors and was rated as one of the best cornerbacks in the country according to the PFF grading system. Cole finished last season with three interceptions and 10 pass-break-ups.

Evaluation: Cole is seen as a very capable cover cornerback, who possesses plus-athleticism and brings bulldog level toughness to the cornerback position. He also brings plus-ball skills and playmaking to the table.

Why it matters: The Longhorns have been looking for a cornerback that could come through the Portal and potentially give the Longhorns an upgrade in the starting line-up. With the loss of Terrance Brooks at the conclusion of spring football, adding a player of Cole's ability was an absolute must. With multiple seasons of eligibility remaining, he gives the Longhorns a stronger presence that it had before in the secondary.

Expectations: Expect Cole to come in and compete for the vacated spot in the starting line-up that Brooks departed from. He'll compete with Gavin Holmes for that spot, but it'll be a disappointment if he doesn't take it and run with it.
