Is It Possible? Casinos in Texas

I would be all for using it to address mental illness facilities and policy, education, and other essential services. A lot of good could come of the money that may help address issues on multiple fronts.
if it actually goes to those causes?

Yeah, that won't happen. Remember how Ann Richards sold the lottery by claiming the money would be reserved for education?

It wasn't.

That can be built into legislation
Sure, it could be. But it wouldn't be. There are 1,000 ways to amend a bill in the final days of the session. You can be sure the leaders of the legislature would find a way to put the money into the general fund, because they would want control. They always do.

I don’t enjoy casino games......it seems boring to me and I’d rather spend my $ on other forms of recreation.

BUT it’s ridiculous that all this $ leaves the state.
There should be casinos in Galveston, on the River Walk, in El Paso, and DFW.

I’m not a big gambler. I go to a casino prob once every 10 years but I’ve always thought it was stupid that every state that borders Texas (Louisiana, Oklahoma and New Mexico) have gambling and we let them have our money when it could be kept in Texas.

Would be nice if we could get rid of all these clowns

Filed by Kuempel, a Republican, and Alvardo, a Democrat, proof that we can have bipartisan support for at least one issue!
Probably because those two are being/will be paid by those casinos. Don't be naive, it's all about money.

Not having casinos keeps would be gambling addicts from trashing their kids college funds. Then again, if whores and drugs and gambling are a harbinger of an enlightened society, go for it. Pass the coke, give me a handy, and put it all on red. Class.

Having a casino in Texas or not won’t change that.

I’ve got it!!! We just need to convince all these people that this is just big brother government telling them what to do! Just like the masks! BOOM, problem solved! You’re welcome.

In 1992 I was interning for a small lobbyist office and Hilton paid a SHITLOAD of money to try and get very narrow approval for a tiny bit of gambling in this state. It was probably the closest it’s ever been to being passed.

When Cornyn was AG he spent our hard earned money shutting down the dangerous Tigua Casino. Bullet dodged and they would have destroyed the lives of many a desert dwelling animal in far far far west Texas.

I mean our liquor laws are still left over from the first day after prohibition was over. It’s not about the people of this State, it’s about the few who control it and they aren’t much fun.

Yes it would. It would proliferate that. That fact cannot be argued. The choice is whether money or morals matters most. Call it old fashioned but the money from family's bank accounts should not fatten the casinos wallets for the good of the state. What should we do? Drain the pocketbooks of the ignorant so they will get a petty return in kind? Ruin a home but hey, the kids get a new globe for world history class? If you see the towers in Vegas then you must understand those palaces weren't built on hard work. It's by stripping the weak of what little they ever thought they had. No casinos in Texas.

Let me get this straight, you think that those that are already addicts aren’t currently draining their bank accounts gambling?? If they are gambling addicts, they are already destroying their lives through that process. Should we ban alcohol because of addicts? What about all those addicted to smoking? The list goes on and on and on.

Is there evidence that states with casinos have a higher percentage of parents blowing their kids college funds than non-casino states?

It would "proliferate that". That is a fact? Please provide support that it would "proliferate" a problem.

People who want to gamble are going to gamble no matter where casinos are located.

Also, who are you to determine where someone spends their money? There is so much money wagering going on during college and professional sports. Should we now ban all sporting events such as college football or basketball? Heck, how many people do football pools, fantasy football, fill out NCAA basketball brackets and NFL Super Bowl pools/squares? These are all forms of gambling that occurs.

You’re making an argument to ban something that affects a very minuscule portion of the population. Alcoholism affects more people in America and has a higher economic impact on American families so should we ban alcohol, close bars, and bring back the Volstead Act?

Bottom line is, money is flowing across the Texas borders to casinos in Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Nevada. This money goes to create jobs and generates multi-millions of dollars in tax revenues for these states. I would much rather see those dollars staying in our state and give Texas an additional industry and help boost Texas’s convention and tourism business which creates more jobs and tax revenues.

The poster acts as if this is the norm when we all know it is not. It’s the same argument we heard about dog/horse tracks and the lottery in Texas yet I would bet 99% of the posters here don’t know anyone who has blown through their child’s college funds or their retirement accounts to go gamble. Are there the one offs? Of course, but this isn’t the norm.

We don’t ban cars because someone dies in a car wreck.

We don’t ban alcohol because someone becomes addicted or dies because of alcohol.

We don’t ban air travel because a plane crashed.

You get the point. The poster you and I responded to knows this too. The argument is extremely weak. If we banned every activity that could potentially harm people, we would all be at home, locked up in our basements.

I certainly respect your stance. I believe you are taking that stance because you believe it is for the best. Taking a principled stance is admirable. And you are right. It is undeniable that there will be some gambling addicts who will ruin their lives and the lives of those around them.

However, allow me to make some counter points. First, I believe those people are a very small percentage of the subset that will gamble legally and responsibly. So are we really going to dictate the laws of the many based on the problems of the few?

Second, there are many other items that can have the same affect but are already legal, alcohol for example.

Third, I have to point out the irony of someone preaching morals who has the screen name “trimm wagon.” I just find it humorous.

But again, keep up the good fight if this is what you truly believe. Myself, I believe Texas should have casinos.

This is something I have thought would be perfect for Texas. It just makes too much sense.
There is/was a casino in Texas, the Kickapoos in Eagle Pass have one. At least they did have one, I haven't been there in years, so don't know if it is still there.

Casinos

just privately owned

I don’t wanna ante, I don’t wanna screw with juice for a while, just do it right out south of Abilene

How on earth is a place like Golden Nugget able to survive in Lake Charles, LA?

You think people are just stopping in on their way by?

He just doesn’t want them. To say they are not highly desirable is just obtuse.

'Drain the pocketbooks of the ignorant'

The ignorant are going to get their pocketbooks drained one way or the other. That's what ignorant means. It's a word that comes down from Old England and all our little old ancestors. (Gratuitous modified quote from D.A. Trotter - My Cousin Vinny)

I think the debate isn’t the ignorant but the ignorant’s family.

There is a casino in Eagle Pass....
There is a casino in Eagle Pass.
With all due respect to the Kickapoos, it’s not a casino in the Las Vegas sense. There are no table games, so no blackjack, roulette, craps, etc. Only slot machines and electronic games. There is also no sports gambling allowed. Basically, everything that interests me in casinos is missing. And it’s in Eagle Pass...

Bummer. Didn't realize it was so limited.
