I very much understand the concept of not wanting to upset the locker room dynamics by “overpaying” for good but not great portal talents.
I also understand and agree that retaining your best players is the most important aspect of NIL.
But at some point you have to address your greatest holes. The staff very well may still do that at DT before next season, but it’s the elephant in the room right now and it leads to the basic question of, can you actually afford to have a team three and four strings deep with good players these days?
Do you have to just let talented players walk who may not be in the two-deep next year because you have to put your resources elsewhere? Or let guys in the two deep commanding huge NIL dollars walk if you have really great depth behind them and can backfill if it means you land a starting caliber player with those dollars elsewhere where you really need it?
College football is becoming ever more complicated, and we’re at the point where for the sake of team building and giving yourself the best possible chance of winning a national title, it may make the most sense to NOT have a team loaded up and down the roster.
